Removing it from the Dock doesn't remove the application, it just removes the "shortcut" to the application in the Dock. It can still be found at in your Applications folder which is within your main hard disc icon on the desktop (to add Safari to the dock again, just drag it's icon from applications to the dock.
Follow Marty's advice in post #6, clear the preference file (it doesn't matter if Safari is on the dock or not).
Before I removed it from the dock, I had already moved the programme to Trash - that's why I removed it fromt he dock, because whenever I clicked on it, it said I had to take it out of trash and I couldn't figure out how to do that.
So, if it's been sent to trash AND removed from dock, do I still need to do something extra to get rid of it?0 -
Try deleting the preference file as I said above; if your old one is messed up, Safari will still try to use it when you reinstall it. Dragging it onto the desktop means that Safari can't find it, so it has to make a new one.
Sorry to be dim, but where is this? I don't know what you mean by 'user folder', so I don't know where to look?0 -
Removing apps from the dock doesn't delete them. The apps themselves are actually located in /Applications (open up a Finder window, then go to Applications). Trash it from there, as well as the aforementioned plist file from your Library (and any other reference you can find to Safari under the Library or Library/Application support).
Download the latest Safari, it should come as a disk image that you open, with a Safari icon inside it. This is the new version. Your objective is to copy this icon (the application) to the Applications folder. Easiest way is to go to File menu - New Finder Window and drag between the two.
If it's off the screen you could try the green button? The equivalent of maximize on Windows. This sizes the window to be appropriate to the content.0 -

I had already moved it to trash from the applications screen. That's when I got irritated at the icon still being in the dock but not letting me use it so I removed the icon - but I had already moved the application to trash. Do I need to do something else?0 -

The folder that has your photo, music, movie, and documents folders in it.
If you can't find it, open up your hard drive, go to Users, and then the folder called whatever your user name is. It'll look like a little house.0 -

That should be enough. Now grab Safari 4 and install it as per my post.0 -

Tried it but still no better.
What's weird is that when it first opens safari it has my bookmarks listed across the screen just for a couple of seconds, then it goes blank and I get the white screen again.
This kind of suggests that it is trying to open an earlier version but I'm sure I've deleted all earlier versions. I've deleted all safari programmes and then installed the new Safari 4 about 4 times now, and restarted after each one, with exactly the same result.0 -
Sorry, I have to go out now but would appreciate any advice - in very simple terms please as I am not technical at all.
I honestly think I've deleted the old copy of safari so don't understand why the download isn't working.
Thanks everyone.0 -

Are you saying that you can't even install it now?
Or does it just not run when it's installed?0 -
Difficult to say what's going on without seeing it.
If you're within 1 year it might be worth grabbing Applecare for your specific Mac (get it cheap off eBay) so that you can use their telephone support for a total of 3 years. They are very good at talking you through things.0
