I'm no scientist, but I find bits of New Scientist quite readable, if not comprehensible. If they have a good reading age it might be OK.
Have you asked at the local library? They might have subscriptions you could look at to get some idea.
I was going to suggest new scientist - it's quite readable for youngsters that age.
I would suggest dropping an email to the Royal Society of Chemistry, they may have resources they can recommend and they have an excellent eductaion department http://www.rsc.org/
For chemistry sets - look for an old one as they are great, most of the newer ones just contain bicarb and vinegar, and that's just not cool. Old practical books are the best for home experiments and you can still find things if you know where to look. I made all sorts of stuff when I was a kid (including some quite large craters in the garden!).

Thank you for the suggestions
I will look into links and hopefully will be able to find something they will enjoy. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0
