Sorry.I also work for a large global company and you are definitely wrong.
There are so many different variables its unbelievable. No two employees have an IDENTICAL record so its near on impossible to enforce any existing legislation.
It doesnt matter if the OPs wife and the other fella are doing the same job. The fact he negotiated a higher salary, and also the probability that he is far more experienced, probably means he is entitled to more money.
Maybe that is why you 'used to work', and i 'currently' work

job specs were handed to both of them a couple of weeks ago for office based advisors and site based advisors (more detailed) - he is only office based, my wife does both ie. far more responsibility. it was confirmed by her dept manager that she does "equal work" - this was put in writing to the company a while back when she was querying the difference and has never been refuted.....0 -

But my point was you made a sweeping statement that could be misconstrude by stating he was not more experienced because your wife is older.
A question to answer is how is your wife more experienced. If you can write it down it adds more weight to your argument, just stating that your wife is older and therefore more experienced doesn't mean a thing.

You need to be careful with this . Time served is often not a good measure of experience. It is possible to serve 5 years and it be repetitive and limited development.. Someone else may have worked 3 years and learnt more and had more exposure to broader/deeper/more complex work.
Competences are a better measure of differences in capability.0 -

You have already stated his Nebosh qualification is more advanced. Number 1 reason why he deserves more
Secondly he joined later and negotiated a better deal
The job spec is not enough on its own as there may be terms in his contract which your wife is unaware of for which a premium is paid for - i.e quick relocation, more flexibility etc
Also he may have came from a higher paying job and the employer needed to pay more to secure him
Also his experience may be better varied etc. Also if he has a diploma and only 2 years experience I reckon his HE/FE is better or more appropiate
Tbh you seem to have found some woman who has a grievance with men who wants to fight.
You also seem to be missing the good side that if he is paid more and has less service he is more likely to be made redundant.
Finally if your wife is so underpaid etc why exactly hasnt she raised her poor salary before now or sought alternative employment.0 -

Thats what I am thinking.
The higher qualification deserves a premium.
Business & Market demanded at the time they hire some for more money & he negotiated well.
Now they wont put the wife through the further qualification because the building industry is suffering & from the summer of 2007 they would have had to drop all the overheads to maximise cash in the bank.
That will be there arguement.

Unfortunately for all your guys it does.
Unless the employer can place a coherent argument in front of a tribunal why they are paying a woman who does "like"* work with a wider range of duties a lower amount then they are breaking the law.
like* does not mean exactly the same.
Oh and original poster when you write things down or talk to your solicitor you need to make it very clear what you mean, and don't make stereotypical assumptions. As someone already pointed out older doesn't not mean more experienced.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
