new broadband and home phone needed

i wonder if someone could guide me on this, i am about to move into a house and want to get broadband, have seen some good deals for phone line and broadband combined from suppliers other than bt but one thing i am not sure about is can i get a phone line from another supplier if i dont already have a bt line connected?

I can only give you the benefit of my own experience.

i have Sky, (free Broadband, free telephone calls evening and weekends)
The basic cost of this is £16.50 per month. You can also have your landline rental with them for £10 a month. (cheaper than BT)
There are often offers on with Sky where they will put you a landline in for free.
You have to learn to haggle, ask for free landline for a 12 month. Ask for free installation. Ask if there are any special offers. They will give you the earth if youre a new customer
but keep sounding unsure and let them think they have talked you into it.
