  • Hi all. Just received this mail from Dell and was wondering if those that are in the know could pass comment:-

    Dear Customer,

    Thank you for your order.

Due to a recent supply issue on one of the components in the computer you recently ordered from us, we have taken the action of replacing this part with an alternative solution to avoid further delays. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused but we assure you this solution provides better performance to the replaced component and allows for a more timely delivery of your Dell PC.

Details to the change are below:

Your system was ordered with the following video card solution:

    ? 256MB ATI® Radeon? X600 Hypermemory graphics card

This has card been changed to the following graphics solution:

? 256MB nVidia? GeForce? 7300LE Turbocache graphics card

Please note through extensive benchmark testing at Dell?s performance labs, we have found the 256MB nVidia GeForce 7300LE Turbocache card offers improved graphics performance vs. the ATI graphics card originally ordered in your system. These results were based on the industry standard tests of both 3DMark'05 and Aquamark 3 "TriScore".

We are currently working to release your order for immediate delivery and apologise for the delay this issue may have caused. Timely shipment of quality products and customer satisfaction has always been and continues to be Dell?s foremost goal.

If you have questions or concerns about this matter, please feel free to contact us.

We hope you enjoy your Dell computer and appreciate your business.

    Regards,
    Dell Customer Care

I found a link which gives a bit of a comparison:-

I will basically be using this pc for everyday tasks, video encoding and editing. But from time to time would like to play the odd game. Is this card capable of handling any of the latest games at all?

Will handle the latest games, just won't be able to play at very high quality settings.

Is the £439 offer of this week better than the £399 offer of last week? I thought the £399 offer would not be repeated anytime soon .... but a very similar offer is on this week!

I bought the £399 system (with only a system restore CD upgrade) and am expecting delivery on Monday. Never bought a Dell before and don't know what to expect!

In my opinion the deal now on is better!

£40 for the extra 512MB Ram and 80GB HDD seems well worth it to me (correct me if I'm wrong)....... the only thing not given 'free' is the McAfee virus protection/firewall.

    I is slightly gutted

I guess you have to be so watchful!

You should phone them if you had already bought one bookshifter.
Ask them to cancel your order.. they'll try and talk you out of it and theres a good chance they will just add the extras if its not been shipped. or they may send you out some other bits in compensation
  • Unfortunately the PC is already of the way, having left the Irish warehouse on Thursday, I was only aware of the upgraded HDD at 1am this morning, (thanks Cab00se). Not too sure as to what I can do now, since I have no personal account manager ..... and don't imagine that calling someone in India will help me too much!

Has anyone else successfully claimed an upgrade/partial refund for the offer of the following week being significantly better than the week before?

    Thanks.

Can anyone also advise me on an external (usb) freeview (dvb-t) tv card which is MCE compliant ..... it looks like the £35.54 freecom amazon one is not MCE compatible.

Sorry for all the questions!

nearly all dedicated cards will play games, just depends on how much eye candy you want.

call of duty 2 has the option to play in DX7 mode for example.

generally the more expensive the card , the better the quality ( like shadows , smoke etc ) will be , and the higher the resolution.

any monitor ( tft) 19" and under is limited to a max res of 1280x1024, it doesnt go up until you get a 20" tft

bookshifter have a look at this article from the Citizens advice bureau:
    Can I Cancel it
You have up to 7 working days from reciept to canel it.

Ultimatley you dont want to have to cancel but you will if its the only way to get the spec pc you require (which happens to be on their website for the same ;) )
