How does this offer rate for regular dell watchers?

It sounds like a great deal esp. because of the monitor options, so would people say this is the kind of offer that comes around every few months, or would you say best in 3/6/9/12/18 months?

*coughs* I've already replied on another forum but for the benefit of those who only visit the onderful MSE forums I'll repeat what I said:

For what *I* want (a replacement for my ageing P3 1ghz Dual CPU workstation) this is the best deal I've seen from Dell for over a year.

To put it into perspective the 19" TFT is worth £200 on it's own. So you are getting the computer for £200 delivered.

Cost of components (ball park figures)

    CPU £160
    HDD £35
M/B £40 (guess as it's Dell branded so you can't buy it as a seperate)
    Case & PSU £40
    Memory £30
    Windows XP MCE £75
    DVD-Rom £15
    Printer £20
    K/B & Mouse (USB) £10
    Works 7.0 £5
    Macaffee 15 month £35

    Delivery of that lot £20

Total £485 with the pleasure of building it yourself. (+ add another £200+ for an equivalent 19" TFT)

You could possibly get things a little cheaper but not by much.

In comparison to the last misprice I remember from Dell (£183 for Cel 2.66, 256Mb, DVD-ROM, 40Gb HDD, 17" CRT) this seems much better value.

It also coincides with the usual end-of-financial-year-quick-reduce-things-to-silly-prices-so-they-sell-lots-and-make- the-figures-look-far-better Dell offers.
  • Its one of the better deals.

Tis the 5 series so it is more than capable of the odd upgrades, like a dvd writer, a decent pci-e video card, and crucial should be able to sort the memory out.

Dont really need the video card for regular use, so about £70 - £80 for ram and dvdrw upgrades and that gives you a nice little system. That doesnt have to be done straight away tho.

dont forget quidco tho, for money back on both the PC and for the memory at crucial.

Unless you play latest games, or want to edit videos, you will not need to buy a fancy video card.

I can play Sims 2 well enough on my ancient MX400, which is a lower spec than what is on board the Dell.

Ive posted this response before but ill post it again just incase it helps somebody...

    Hi Peeps...

Dont buy from Dell online, decide on the specification of your PC then phone Dell and haggle.

I phoned in October 05 when I needed a new highly specc'ed desktop PC. I spoke to a guy called Mustafa in a far flung call centre and haggled a £1110.00 PC down to £719.00.

Dont get too excited, part of the reason for that huge discount was that I chose not to have the 19" TFT Monitor, they knocked off £160 for that. (BTW, you cant select a "No Monitor" option online).

The other £230 discount was just politely haggled down.

I also haggled a deal on a Next Business Day Gaurantee, they were asking £141.00 for a 3 year, I got a 2 year for £23.00, YES - £23.00 - PHONE DELL AND HAGGLE.

    Hope this helps,

    Mark.

I did'nt push her... she fell.
  • regarding the warranty.

Just select the bog standard one online, within a few weeks ( they keep ringing me)no doubt they will ring to say would you like to extend it.

Then haggle, at least they are paying for the call then.LOL

Take all the Dell crap off, put in a new graphics card, load up some games and enjoy :)
