Just going back to what you said about no water rates in Scotland....The council tax figure you're quoting includes your water charges in Scotland. BUT when you use entitled to website, you need to use just the council tax figure to get a more accurate assessment of your entitlement to council tax benefit. Your local authority's website will have the actual figure for your band, or it will be shown somewhere on your annual council tax demand.

I think your Council Tax rate is probably correct. Our house is Band C even though it is probably only worth about £100-£120,000 just now and we are paying £135 per month. Not sure if you would qualify for Council Tax benefit though. We only earn about 2/3 of your DH's wage and we don't qualify for anything. Mind you I thought they were wrong so might try claiming again.

I hope the BP hasn't caused problems re selling on the LR. If you could sell it on it would certainly help a lot. Living out in the sticks is great until it comes to times like this when you could do with a decent transport system:mad:.

    Good luck.

About tax credits, quick question. Did you get the partnership payout in 08/09 tax year or 09/10 tax year?

I would look at claiming job seekers - it'll hopefully be a bit more money and they should be able to tell you how it works with regads to childcare and that sort of thing - there is a phone number to ring and they go through it all with you - worth a try anyway - I would have thought you would get something?

Also would get in touch with the accountant and find out what is happening with the car finance and where you stand on it. Also isn't there national business line or something which you could get some advice from? You may need to force the ex BP's hand as you can't really afford to be nice and you don't want to be stuck with a car that's not suitable for you and possibly liable for some of the debt on it? Like I said - I don't know how it works but best get the legal side checked out so there are no nasty surprises.
The other thing that struck me was whether you could do some small business work from home - I'm not sure what your role was but maybe you could help people with their books (before they get sent to the accountant?), type letters, answer emails, take phone messages, do mailshots etc for people? maybe advertise your skills and see if people are interested.

    Hi Kissjenn,

We got the partnership payout in 2008/2009. I hope we do qualify for tax credits it would certainly help out until such times as I get a job.

    Hi
Is the mortgage interest only? Can you take a mortgage holiday? Both might help see you through to April 10 when you get your tax credits.

With regards to the gas, I was actually told it wouldnt make any difference if I turned off the radiators in the rooms we didnt use. have I been told the wrong information?

As far as I know it absolutely DOES makes a difference. The more radiators you have on, the more gas you are using, the more the bill is. Turn all of them off except the ones you need. Living room only!

Unless someone wants to correct me....?

    Hello,

The mortgage is a repayment, and we are not allowed to take a mortgage holiday with the type of mortage we have.

    Hello Tuggy,

if this is correct then I will definetly try this when we put the heating back on in the winter. At the moment we only have the hot water on for a little while.
