    hi minty
as you walk into the room and look on the floor to your right there is a wooden box on the floor. its about a foot high, a foot wide and a few feet long. it where the slope of the stair ceiling eats into the room. the stairs sort of go under the room.

by cutting the legs off the bed, it would mean that the two bottom legs of the bed would rest on the box and the box would sit underneath the bed.

Got you! our stairs go the other way away from our box room, so that's why I couldn't work it out! Our slope seems to come out from the room, not go into it...
  • we have the same with our box room but we've put a wardobe onto the the bulkhead (box from the stairs) with a full size single bed running in front of the wardrobe and then a chest of drawers on the other wall. This room measures something like 6.5ft wide by 9ft long

My hubby lived in a box room at his parents until he moved out and he loved it, he was the older of 2 brothers but actually chose the smaller room because he got to decorate it as he wanted and it was less space to keep tidy!

The also had the box room dilemma when my auntie and uncle moved into their new house and my they had a large double room and a small single for their 2 kids to decide between, the deal was that whoever had the smaller room could have it exactly as they wanted but whoever had the larger bedroom had a double bed in there and if there were guest the room had to be spotless and they had to sleep downstairs. It also meant that they were a bit more restricted on how they wanted their room decorated if they took the big room because it had to be suitable for guests too. It meant the kids decided so they never resented the decision.

DD's room had similar problems and OH cut the legs off her mid sleeper. She's 11 now and her room has just been totally redesigned. We had a local cabinet maker make a cabin type bed with lots of storage based on my designs. She has 4 large drawers directly under the bed and 3 large drop fronted cupboards leading to the space under the bed. Her headboard is a large bookcase with a hidden 'secret' cupboard for her diaries and he even made me a thinner dressing table for her so she can have her PC and all her make up on there.

I got rid of the curtains going for a roller blind, losing the curtains instantly made the room look bigger, and we went for a white wallpaper with small silver stars, again making it look bigger.

DD loves it, space for her to be a teenager and plenty of storage.
  • I have same problem with the box room as everyone else. How I dealt with it was to have a local joiner come out and alter it. I found that after removing the box to reveal the slope beneath that the box is much bigger than it needs to be. The "new" box has two sections. The one against the wall being tallest, then it drops to a pretty low one. Half and half. This in itself made the room significantly larger but more importantly it means that now there is the room to put the bed along the wall butting up against the larger box. It also means I can have the bed facing into the room and place a bedside table on the lower box without it being too high. So I now have four possible bed positions in the room whereas before only one - under the window. The larger box is the depth of a wardrobe just about but not an ideal location for it aesthetically and I really wanted the room to look good. To deal with this I've placed shelves above it which are practical, attractive and accessible while not eating into space. At the side on the normal floor I had space between the box and stairs that was too small for a wardrobe or drawers. Again wasted space but I found a narrow wardrobe with glass door that fits perfectly with space spare. It's one narrow door width and the mirror door again makes the room feel bigger.

I want to change this now so was here for ideas. Got a few too. Hope my approach to this helps someone. Those boxes really can be made much smaller though. Oh cost me £20 for the joiner.
  • this is the exact problem i have with my sons room. Ive been looking at the ikea Kura bed for him as theres no space for toys etc. I do like the idea of chopping down the legs and securing to the wooden box-genius!!! though my newest problem is daughter not happy at the idea of her brother having a cabin bed when she's just got a 'boring normal bed'!!! Oops :)

I would personally be looking on Ebay or preloved, they seem to have a number of second hand bunk beds/midi sleepers for sale on there, before buying one at full price.

My "box" room - DH has built a wardrobe on the box, with shelving in too. Managed to finally find a single bed that fit into the space, it also has drawers underneath.

The flat screen Tv is on the wall too.

    It's perfect for a teenager.

Wooden blinds at the window, and a light carpet make the room appear larger than it actually is.
