what to do with a box room

hi

we have 3 bedrooms and 2 kids (aged 2 and 4).

our third bedroom is really a half room - big enough for a bed (just) and a chest of drawers. there is also a box over where the stairs go in the corner (ifyou know what i mean)

i think that the time has come to move out little one into a proper bed.

any thoughts on how we can maximise storage, play and sleeping room?

mid sleepers (would that look too big in the room?), cabin bed, normal bed?

not got loads of cash though!

need input as husband being a bit useless about it!:o

thanks

Could you not put the children in a room together for sleeping and make the box room more of a playroom?

Otherwise, I bought DD a midsleeper with a tent underneath and it fits an awful lot of toys under there... My friend has her son in one in a box room and it doesn't look too big for the room...

Put cabin beds in the main room and they both sleep in there.

Keep all their clothes in the other room, it will make more room for toys in the bedroom.

I had the same problem. My solution was a mid sleeper in the small bedroom. My OH cut off the legs half way on one end of the mid sleeper and put that end on the box over the stairs and attached the cut off legs to the box to make it secure. It did free up a little extra space in the room. My DD also has a chest of draws in the room.

I have always thought about having my 2 DDs share the bigger room and make the smaller one a play room, but I know that at times they like their own space, however little it is.

How clever is that? Sounds like an ideal solution for a little 2 year-old's room. I would never have thought of it. Brilliant!

I was going to suggest something similar. We had someone build a bed from the box to the opposite wall. It didn't cost ummm anything I think if I remember rightly as a very handy and helpful neighbour did it. :D Doing it that way meant a full size mattress could be fit on top. Two sets of drawers fit under the bed with space to the side of them and behind the drawers for larger toys to be stored.

Actually as DS is now about 6' tall and could do with a double, and DD is grown and practically 'flown' they are about to do a room swap so he can have the larger room. So we will be knocking the bed out and putting her 'normal' bed against the window in the box room which is the only place it will fit.

I was also going to suggest something similar to MrsAnnie, or alternatively put bunk beds in the box room and then they can share the larger room for toys, clothes etc as well as room being able to be used for guests if this is a requirement to you without disturbing the childrens sleep arrangements.

My family have had box rooms in the past, my parents, and my uncle, mum used hers as a mini medical room (dialysis)

But my uncle had 2 boys, the eldest had the box room, and so had a cabin bed made which went over the box part and the other half was able to have storage underneath (toys etc) with room for a desk and wardrobe if i can remember (late 80's), I've even slept in that room, its not a huge room, but then money is tight it is amazing what you can do with a small room like that.
This my friend has her son in a box room but the box bit has been removed somehow, but a bed had to be made to fit the room
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
  • thanks for all of your replies.

my husband did suggest the girls could share but I would like them to have their own space.

i think a mid sleeper with the legs cut sounds great. I that could be the way forwards. thanks again

If the room is really that small, then in a couple of years time the girl in the tiny room is going to be less than pleased that her sister has a decent sized room while she is confined in such a small space.

I'd have them share, and use it as a dressing room which would give them both privacy as they get older. It could also be used as a homework station as they grow or have the PC set up in there.
