Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I've checked out that page too, and I've added a few to my basket waiting for the reductions to come - hopefully :)

I'm off on the 16th so hope so :)
  • Talking of M&S, I bought a dress from one of their stores the other week and decided I needed it in a different size. I went back to the store, they didn't have the size in stock and the man at the sales counter said that i would have to order it by phone or online as they don't do it in-store any more. that would be fine, I said, apart from the fact that you now have to pay a delivery fee to exchange an item.
I know it is only £3.50, but that is not the customer service that you would expect from M&S.
I did check other branches and none of them have it in stock.
Anyone else had to do this?

Yeah my aunt did work on the ordering desk until last month now all the staff have been dispersed throughout the store, some to the cafe, food hall etc..

My aunt was transferred to the refund desk but only because she is disabled and cant be on her feet all day.

Its been awful for the store staff they have worked their way up to the ordering desk then some bigwig decides to close them all in a cost cutting excercise and practically demote the staff to the cafe & foodhall!

I know staff have been told that if they get enough complaints from customers m&s will consider reopening ordering desks in selected stores so i urge you to write/ phone/ email and make sure you name the store which you visited!!

I have already complained about this - it drives me mad that I can't just request a different size there are then and collect it in my lunch hour a few days later. Grrr. Get complaining everyone!

Sale items in my basket and am waiting now for the usual onslaught of out of stock warnings!

Working on the ordering desk is no more important than working in cafe or foods. You don't work your way up there!

Unfortunately the big change in the last 26 years is web ordering, M&S are reporting double digit growth in this area whilst store sales over the year stay more or less the same.

In foods we have to restock at a rate of 60 crates an hour (exact figure varies by section, some are up to 75). Tills don't have productivity targets but you can probably scan an item every couple of seconds. All the while our productivity is being monitored more and more closely as staffing levels are being squeezed due to the dip in profits.

Loads of customers ordering at the desk can take 10 minutes to order one item, sadly processing around 6 items an hour compared to 60 crates an hour just isn't cost effective when we have such high productivity targets and there is the alternative of using the web.

I think they've got the details wrong though...most companies have a reserve online and collect in store service for free, and not being able to swap sizes in store is daft.

That's the way big businesses work these days, self service/self scanning will soon account for half of purchases in supermarkets like Tesco, and I notice a lot of stores just put crates out rather than having to remove items and restock on actual shelves.

And yes, I don't particularly like the way companies with profits counted in the hundreds of millions or billions are trying to eliminate staff. Which is why I still do the bulk of my food shopping at the local wholefood cooperative :)

You would still be a section manager or section co-ordinator no matter what section you were on. Ordering desk is no different from foods or cafe!
