thanks oldernotwiser... completely forgot about the student loans company...
think she will stay with her company (works in a bookies), on zero hours contract, so might pick up a shift a week, 'going out' money.
shes really excited about studying to be a midwife, but first she has to complete an access course, equivelent to 3 a-levels, starting sept 09 - lasting 30 weeks.
shes already chosen her pencil case! haha
Wish her all the best from us.0 -

Fantastic! I remember how excited I was buying all my bits for uni... Mind you maybe it's only me who loves stationary shopping
Several people I know had to take an access course, but because of it they're all dab hands at structuring and writing essays, and at adapting to the huge amount of information that you have to absorb... something I found difficult, having been out of any sort of education for some years. The access course will prepare her very well. Best of luck to her.0 -

Lol, you are not alone! I know several people (myself included) who love stationary shopping!
I agree Access courses are great preparation for uni.0 -
i have almost finished my access course-just a presentation to do on wednesday, then thats me done!! it has been a tremendous learning opportunity-learning to write essays and refence in text which i'm sure will prove valuable in uni.i have also made some great friends whom will be on the same course as me in uni. going back to "school" is the best thing i've done.good luck and enjoy it

Gosh yes, that's another big benefit, as the course encourages mutual support.
I made friends with people I may never have got to know otherwise, and one in particular has become a very good friend.0 -
Hi just wondered what age people are, who are going to do the nhs courses. I am thinking of doing one but i am 41 so not sure if that would be considered too old?0

My access course was a general one and you would not have stood out at all. It was roughly half and half between those under 30 and over 30, I'd have said.
I don't think you will for a nursing degree either as I know people aged between 35 and 55 who have done nursing and they always seem to be in a group of people around the same age when I see them around the uni.0 -
thanks all for your comments. the wife also loves stationary! except hers includes a desk she wants for the computer so she can have her own work space in the spare room.
shes doing english lit, human biology, and quantitive methods... rather her than me!
her only worry is going 'back to school'... as its been 6 years since she passed her gcse's. but like you have said, its better than her jumping straight into uni!0 -

She will be fine with an access course as they start with the basics and many won't have studied for decades!0 -

i'll let her know that as that was her main concern. she is quite clever though and managed a load of B's at gcse, which wasnt bad for someone that was 'too cool for school' ... and permanently removed from some lessons. haha.
