NHS Bursary?

I am going to start a nursing course. I was going to wait until 2012, but have seen that there is a NHs bursary up to £6K. Is this a one off 6K, or is it fo three years? If its for three years, is it £6K a year, or 6K for the three years?
thanks

it varies depending on your position...if u have kids/spouse...u done load the form from the internet...has your colledge given u details ?..it gets paid monthly
    onwards and upwards
  • I have one kid and a husband. I did the form and it said 8K but that seems a massive amount. But I could see where is said if this was a year or to cover the three years?

The NHS bursary is an annual amount. Will you be doing the degree or the Diploma?

I know there are financial incentives for doing the diploma but I'd be wary of following that route now it is dying out.

Hi it is paid every year you stay on the course. I think as from 2011 you have to do a degree or if you qualify before then you will have to do an extra year to top up to degree level but this can be achieved once you are in a nursing role.

My husband is a student RMN who finishes next year and has been told he will have to do the 1 year to make it degree level - eventually - but this will be paid for by the employer and done possible 1 day a week at uni or the like.

I am hoping to do an Occupational Therapy course in 2011 but this is degree level anyway, this also attracts a bursary, as does Radiology, Physio, quite a few allied health professions if you fancied another path

My husband will have qualified by then and my youngest will start school the year I start, hopefully

Also, if you choose the part time course you can have a pro rata bursary, I found this out at a Uni open day yesterday as I feel I might struggle during the school holidays as you get placements where you are expected to work full time for about 10 weeks at a time

    Good luck

I'm on a diploma course training to become an RMN and certainly at my university, you can choose to convert to a degree course, so I wouldn't worry too much about "committing" yourself to degree or diploma. If you are doing especially well on diploma you can be moved to degree, vice-versa if you're finding the degree too demanding you can choose to take diploma. It does seem to be very flexible where I am.

Many people on my course, myself included, have chosen the diploma over the degree simply because of the money you get. With the diploma you get around 6k per year, non means tested. The degree is means tested, and quite a bit less. As other posters have confirmed, the bursary is an annual payment, that you receive for every year you're on the course.

You would qualify for dependents allowance as well, for your child, and possibly for your partner if he is earning a low wage, and I think 8k sounds about right. The council tax deduction of 25% is really useful too. A lady in my class is claiming childcare allowance too and says it's a godsend.

Good luck! I am finding this the most rewarding career choice I have made (and I am terribly thankful for all the funding I'm receiving to be able to do this) - here's hoping it'll be a good move for you too :)

wife is hoping to do a midwifery degree at northumbria sept 2010.

she currently earns 14k basic... so with the bursary it will make losing her wage easier...

council tax reduction sounds good too.

we have no kids though, so wont get as much as others in this thread.

my wage only 18k... so do you reckon we would get more ££ to help with me earning a low wage?

£18,000 isn't really a low wage, particularly in the North East.

Your wife will also be eligible for a student loan as she's doing the degree course so, given that both the loan and the bursary aren't taxed and she won't pay NICs on them, you'll be on a similar income to what you get now.

Many students on Nursing and Midwifery courses also do a few shifts on the nursing bank and, of course, she'll have several weeks free in the summer when she'll be available for work.

thanks oldernotwiser... completely forgot about the student loans company...

think she will stay with her company (works in a bookies), on zero hours contract, so might pick up a shift a week, 'going out' money.

shes really excited about studying to be a midwife, but first she has to complete an access course, equivelent to 3 a-levels, starting sept 09 - lasting 30 weeks.

shes already chosen her pencil case! haha
