Where to start - new bathroom and toilet?

Options
Hello,

I want to get a new bathroom and lavatory for my mum but have no idea where to start. I dont want to get ripped off.

Do I buy the bathroom/toilet suite seperately and then get it fitted?

Do I go to a store like wickes, b&q, ikea or do I go to an independent store?

How much is a reasonable price? I want a bath with an electric shower, sink and toilet.

Any recommendations.

    Hi

B&Q do very reasonably priced sanitary ware, the range is called 'to go'. So they have a 'toilet to go', 'basin to go', etc. It is alright stuff & expect to pay around £100 for the toilet / cistern & basin. Not sure if it comes with a tap. They also do a toilet set called the Postiano, that comes in at £150-ish. Again alright stuff.

For a shower I'd fit either a Mira or Triton, both are very good brands. Fit the highest rating possible, kWatt rating that is. But this will depend on several factors & you may have to get someone (Electrician or Plumber) in to advise on what you can fit. But expect to pay around £100 for a decent shower. Fitting cost will depend on the particular house, but ballpark is maybe another £300.

Fitting prices vary across the UK, most trades are relatively quiet, however the refurbishment guys are pretty busy. Guess with fewer people moving more is being spent on their current houses.

Get a recommendation if at all possible.

    Thanks a lot!

Do you think 2k/3k is enough for the bath, electric shower, sink and toilet, tiles and labour?

I would ike to put tiles on the floor and half way up the wall. They will have to rip up the old bath/sink/toilet/tiles/laminate flooring and putthe new stuff in. The bathroom is quite small with only a bath, sink and radiator in there.

to save a bit of money we ripped out the old bathroom stuff and dumped it at the tip ourselves, a bit of hassle but knocked a couple of hundred off the bill.

Good afternoon: Cost will be dependent on the standard of the specification and where you are in the UK. Try plumbers' merchants instead of the sheds for your sanitaryware etc. eg. PTS. I'd recommend the Twyford Alcona range...quality product at a good price.

Anyone that recommends B&Q for sanitryware is not a tradesman,

The products are cheap low end rubbish,And better products are available for not much more cash and can be bought from a trade supplier

You will get a triton shower for £100 but again branded Mira Sports start at £170 for trade....You always get what you pay for so avoid the cheapest

As usual i always praise PTS, Prices to Non-Trade are resonable

Take a look at the concept, create and jasper morrison range from Ideal Standard, Up to date looks without the huge price tag

No need to avoid B&Q at all. I bought a pretty good basic steel bath, called a trade white cost £60 odd.

For £60 i would rather have a cheap ROCA item than B&Q

    PTS is plumbing trade supplies

    Website is www.ptsplumbing.co.uk

Now, now Andy don't get stressed out;) over what I do for a living. It is really nothing to do with you, is it? Try to keep on track with the post.

As the Edinburgh lass says 'every cloud has its silver lining'. Is everything at B&Q good....hmm no, but do they have a couple of gems in their huge range?...yep they do. Remember Andyhop its called 'moneysavingexpert.com' so if you've got a money saving tip, lets all play nice with the other children & share those tips.

So here's mine, a Mira 8.5kW shower for under 100 quid. Where? At B&Q ;)of course. Yep I couldn't believe it either, (no need to eat your words Andy);). Is it a Mira Sport, nope, but it is a very cheap Mira:money:.

So foi1983, I don't mean to patronise, but you are asking for advice. Mine's is shop around & don't (at this stage) exclude anywhere, take your time (don't rush into anything you can't get out of) & ask lots of questions.

    That's cool Jockster.

The list that I have so far is:
    • B&Q
    • PTS
    • Wickes
    Any more recommendations anyone?

I went on the PTS website and they wont send me a brochure unless I have a company, which I dont? How do I get trade prices then?
