  • Shall we boycott the RSPCA because they do support some of the animal rights extremists, such as Stop Huntingdon (sp?) Life Sciences, with money raised from public donations?

I have stopped giving to the RSPCA because they started to take so many political stances - I give direct to my local cats & dogs home now.

Now now, this is the green board and gosh, we're entitled to have our bleeding heart liberal views here. Has anyone read Ethical Consumer? They rate a company according to their business link or investments in other companies.

For example, IIRC, Hovis has links to the arms trade.
Nestle? Well, if you don't know why I'm boycotting Nestle, perhaps this isn't the board for you.

You can make a stand about whatever you want... tenuous or otherwise.
thanks for your comments, also the nestle info

I am an animal/nature lover myself but I must confess I find squeek's OP to be totally naive and pretty pointless in the extreme.

To say that we should boycott a maker of glass ornaments because they also make optics for gunsights shows such a simplistic view of things that one wonders if squeek is allowed to cross the road on his/her own.

A man has a gun which he is pointing at an animal - who should we boycott as well ?

    The gun manufacturer ?
The firm that makes the varnish that is applied to the stock of the gun ? Who also make the varnish on your renewable timber front door.
The firm that makes the tins that the varnish manufacturer puts his products in ? Who also make the tins containing the fair trade organic pet food for your moggy.
The firm that makes the machine that makes the tins ? Who also make the machine used to make hospital equipment.
The firm that makes the steel plate for the tins ? Who also make steel for the brick ties holding your house together.
The company that digs the iron ore from the ground ? Who supply ore for just about EVERYTHING !
..........AND of course don't forget to boycott the firm that makes the buttons on the trousers of the man driving the excavator for the iron ore company !!

Squeek may well find that he/she or some of his/her relatives are "supporting" some pretty unsavory practices if he/she wishes to look close enough.
i think you've missed the point here.
swarovski are well known for making animal figures, and people who love animals sometimes tend to collect them, as i did once. not many people will know about swarovski optics, rifle sights made for hunting/killing animals with.

I'm sure they will squeek, just as they're aware of Swarovski optics being in their binoculars and field scopes which enable nature lovers to see animals and their beauty so much closer than would otherwise be possible. You can't always just have one side of an argument to put forward, look at all sides. Some things, like it or not, we have to live in the knowledge of there often being 2 reasons/needs for. I'm afraid you need to learn this and accept things for what they are - not what you'd wish them to be. We don't always get what we want.

the way i see it , is that no body wants to die, so why kill it !
no, but they do make pretty little animal figures, and being one of many animal lovers in the uk , i have bought some over the yrs. anyway just cos you got an expensive scope, dont mean your a good shot.

Thats your view but for many people hunting is a part of their lifes especially in the US and Europe, I have no time for the idiots who want to shoot a drugged and caged lion, but have no objection to someone who wants to take a rabbit/deer/pigeon etc for the pot.

I dont hunt anymore, but was brought up with a grandfather who was a gamekeeper for a large estate in somerset. I am sure you may believe that all hunters are the devil incarnate, but there is a code of honour amongst hunters, it was drummed into me from age 5 that you never shoot for fun, you only take a shot if it will drop the animal in one shot, injuring was not an option and most importantly if you kill an animal you eat it.

I dare say if somone is purchasing an expensive Swarovski scope for their rifle, its unlikely that they are an unskilled numpty who couldnt hit a barn door from a 100 yards.

I have not missed the point.

Just about every company in the land has links to some unsavoury practices - this is a fact of life.
If you wish to boycott a particular company - fine, but please don't try and persuade others that your moral stance should be followed by all. Your argument is totally unsound.
  • How do you draw the line, and where?
Don't have a problem with the sights. Do have a problem with the d!ckless that use them to shoot for fun rather than ie rabid foxes, food, etc.

I believe it is not the product in this instance but the people.
