I tried this, once; I'd cleaned the top of the wall cupboards to a perfect shine before putting the paper down and put pretty pots and pans on top of the paper, but the cat decided to jump up onto the wall unit, skidded on the paper (because it was so shiny underneath) and knocked a few things onto the worktop below - including himself. Nothing broke, surprisingly, but I took the paper off anyway.
I needn't have bothered because I never saw the cat up there after that, it must have put him off exploring.
