Nothing personal, but really, unless mines was rubbish at their job...my
' better off ' calculation, had it all dressed up to make it look like it was something it turned out not to be. I know you're just doing your job, but IMHO, the system is all wrong.

I can only voice for certain my experience, but many a times, i've heard other stories and wonder sometimes if arms and legs are being added to the telling.

Could you tell me out of interest, please, at your CAB office - do you calculate into the ' better off' calculation - how much rent/council tax will need to be paid, prescription medicines ?
Why would you not want to go to CAB? I work there, whats wrong with us advisers!!! They can do the calculation as what you would get now, and what you would get then - a "better off calculation"

The Quick Benefit Check used at the CAB looks at what benefits that an individual maybe entitled to once the figures and details from the client have been inputted into the database. It looks at rent/mortgage/CTB payments aswell as entitlement to PC, WTC/CTC, IS, JSA. The adviser has to manually input DLA, pensions etc. It does not give details of prescripsions, but an adviser would be able to deal with it seperately.

An adviser can only work with what they have and IMO the QBC is a very good calculator in the right hands. A good adviser will also look at the wider picture and consider whether the client should apply for CA or DLA which the QBC would not take into account.

If you did not understand your QBC results you should have asked for a second opinion rather than moan about it. The QBC considers CTB and HB/LHA as income and it will look like you are getting more in your hand when reality it is getting paid directly to the landlord/LA.

Thats a bit off to say something like that. If i am correct, and i apologise if i am wrong but these people who help with advice at the CAB are not paid and give their time willingly. The are giving for nothing!! not GETTING for nothing.

The advisers are not paid and are voluntary.

If someone is not happy with the advise they have been given they can request to speak to the superviser. In my experience, clients sometimes do not understand what an adviser has said and is scared to speak up or they are in denial.

Only ever had to ask an advisor once in my life for a ' better off ' calculation within the offices, and I certainly wasn't scared to ask.

My response - ( which I've heard echoed many a times ) Council tax and rent would have to be taken up with the council office, and even then, they could only tell you what discount you would get or possibly entitled to, after you start working.

Really, i'm all for people getting up off their backsides and work, contribute. But you can't blame people for staying at home. What's the point in doing the ' right thing ' when it makes you worse off finacially, which in tow brings stress within your life.

Like I said, it wasn't personal and the system doesn't work for everyone and asked you the question out of interest and wondered if the ' go to the council ' protocol was practiced over.

The QBC can give a estimate of the amout of entitlement to LHA/HB/CTB, but you would have to go to your LA to claim for it.
