Bear in mind that the pods will have been sprayed with chemicals , especially the broad beans.

The reason I would ask on here instead of just googling it is because people have tried these things for themselves and home recipies are often more thrifty/tasty

Thriftlady - thank you for your recipe. We have now tried it using the peapods and a packet of our ham stock. It has made a delicious light soup which will go into the freezer and be a very nice chilled starter on a hot day. We whizzed the soup up with a stick blender and strained it to get rid of all the stringy fibres from the pea pods. And the peas were delicious too. I had quite forgotten what freshly shucked peas taste like - we so rarely have a chance to eat them, relying on the frozen ones most of the time.

Ooh, thanks for the recipe! I'm going to pick a load from the garden tomorrow (our peas have grown really well so far this year) so I know they haven't been sprayed with anything other than water and the odd contribution from the birds!

Do you think I could also freeze the shells and use them to make soup later?

What a good idea, much quicker than rubbing through a sieve. Glad you liked it.

Actually my OH made the soup. He softened the pea pods first by sweating them in a little butter with a chopped onion for 20 minutes or so which I think helped to bring out the pea flavour. I shall have to watch my laurels. Normally I'm the soup maker in this house but he is quickly catching me up, having also made delicious asparagus soup in the same way, sweating the chopped end bits of the stalks which would normally have gone onto the compost heap.
  • I buy peas in their pods and use the peas raw in salads etc, but it always feels like such a waste throwing the pods away as they are quite sweet if you chew on them. Any ideas for recipes using just the pods? (Just remembered the 'pea pod burgundy' they used to make in The Good Life, but that might be a tad ambitious!)
