Well consolidatig loans and c/c is normally a good move as your mortgage rates will undoubtedly(sp) be cheaper than other lending so I would say trying to save you money is responsible. Also getting money to improve the quality and value of your property is you can afford to do so can't really be seen as irresponsible can it?

If you don't want them contacting you by phone I'm sure they will have a way of removing you from their calling lists (or mailing lists or other contact lists). Ask them to do this.

The have asked you the question "do you want to borrow?". They haven't advanced you any money yet, so it's hard to describe them as an irresponsible lender for this. If the took an application from you, could clearly see you were overstretched but lent you the money anyway, that would be irresponsible.

To miss out on the opportunity to lend to responsible customers who have a need to borrow would be irresponsible.

Asking you the question doesnt mean you will get the money.

Banks are being encouraged to lend and are looking for quality borrowers to do this. You would still have been credit checked and would have to have met their current criteria, which is more responsbible that in the past.

And of course, you can say no if you dont want it.

I've had loads of calls from RBS over the last couple of months offering me a remortgage, pre-approved loand of up to £10000, a credit card and extolling the benefits of a Royalties Gold account. Annoyingly, last week I was looking to get a zero percent credit card as my current one is out of its promotional period in August, so I applied on line and got rejected :(

surely its up to the customer to contact them if they decide to borrow money .

There is another thread about pre approvals that suggests you go into the branch and ask for a review on your account to see what you will get - the idea being that you won't ask for too much credit to transfer a balance and therefore won't get rejected - does that make sense?

As I said in my earlier post, the customer can choose to opt out of marketing calls / mailings etc.

Do that and then it is up to the customer to make the contact.

Don't do that and there is no reason (legally or ethically in my view) why they shouldn't contact you to make you aware of products and services that they have. A major customer gripe with their bank in that "nobody told me I could have this account or borrow money on my mortgage" etc. It's no different to a travel company ringing you and asking you if you want to pay an extra £100 to sit in a posh lounge at the airport or organise airport parking etc.

If you don't like it, take control of the situation and opt out.

It's not (technically) cold calling - you are an existing customer who has not opted out.
