I am 49, and a colleague asked some of our students to guess our ages, thye guessed at 37 for me, and 42 for her. She is 35!!! she was not pleased, as the reason she asked is that she thinks she looks 24!! I was ecstatic:j
I think mixing with younger people and keeping up with trends helps, as does knowing what suits you and adapting trends to suit your age. Laughing a lot also helps keep your face fluid. Good grooming, and dressing to hide faults rather than draw attention to them.0 -
Loosing weight is the single biggest thing that changed my appearance, I wasn't big, a size 12, but I felt I was starting to look frumpy so I dropped to a size 6-8 it really changed my face, clothes looked better and I had extra confidence, people started asking me if I had work done (I haven't)!
A few years on and I'm still the same size and happier with myself then ever, apart from the weightloss my fav thing I have done for myself is to buy the hair that I always wanted:rotfl:extensions? cant beat em:D
Change your diet, healthy eating will show on your skin and hair and sorry if its politically incorrect but slim does equal attractive and youthful whether we like it or not thats why theres a billion pound slimming industry:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
I presume the op is female? As a male i think the key things (for females) would be to lose weight if necessary/tone up,dont smoke, drink only in moderation, get a hairstyle that suits you,get some specs that suit you if you need them (and even maybe if you dont!),stay OUT of the sun, dont wear tatoos, dont do bling.0

Can I add a few ageing habits that I think make you look older than you would want to be?!
Pushing your reading glasses to the end of your nose and looking over them.
Making that sort of grunting sound , as you bend down to pick something up!
Holding things at arms' length to read them (Put your glasses on or ask someone else!)
That extra-wide-parting effect that comes from not keeping your regrowth tinted
Not keeping ample boobs hoiked up:eek:0 -

:rotfl:I do this all the time and my daughter always says mum you sound like an old woman, so I guess I agree then:DThank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
The fastest aid to looking younger happened after my hip replacement at the age of 39. I couldn't believe how young I looked when I looked at myself in the mirror after the op, I suppose the instant relief from a lifetime of arthritic pain made the years melt away!
I'm 42 and aren't in the least bit phased by my age, I think I look better now than I did in my teens and twenties. Apparently I don't look or act like a "normal 40-something" (whatever that is). I wear my hair long, dress in an individual way to please myself and practice yoga and pilates as well as swim 3 times a week. I use cheap skincare products and don't buy into beauty companies hype and false promises.
Something must be working as I rarely leave the house without strangers complementing me on my appearance. Most people guess at me being in my late twenties/early thirties and I've caused a lot of upset at the over-forties public swim at the local baths as people have complained that I'm too young to be using the facility!0 -
I feel much better about myself at 42 than I did in my thirties, I've lost over a stone and had my hair cut in a very sharp bob like I had in my twenties - my husband loves it this way.
Being happy makes you look younger and plenty of great sex is a good de-stresser and good excercise to boot if you make it "interesting" and put in some effort. I could do with losing another stone but that would mean a whole new wardrobe, not very moneysaving when I've just bought lots of very sexy undies."There is a light that never goes out"0 -

To be honest I do decide to do this every few years, then as it grows it goes all sticky outy and drives me mad, and I end up getting it cut short again. I have a bit (well probably a lot) of grey coming through, but I keep fighting it. I know some people look fab with grey hair, but it just makes me feel washed out and old.
I think staying slim helps, and a pair of fab sunglasses always takes years of me. Well I think it does, probably cos I cant see the wrinkles!
Tried to grow my hair out last year and gave up cos it just looked such a mess and it was hard getting used to flatter hair on top, when all my life I've been having height on top or more recently, a mussed-up spiky look.
This time I've been paying (through gritted teeth) to keep having it trimmed into shape regularly, needs loads of thinning and have layers in, but nothing off the overall length. It's still nowhere near my shoulders, but it does look like it's in a style and I can get decent results with the blow dryer and a smoothing balm and get some volume in it for going out !. Hopefully I can perservere this time. Personally I agree about the grey. My hair is very dark (there's another 'rule' broken!) and when my roots need doing and I show off the grey/white regrowth section to my nearest and dearest they are all in shock as they don't think of me me like that!!0 -

Well having read your posts on the "What are you wearing today?" thread, I had you down as a 19 year old student:rotfl:Honestly!:rotfl:0 -
Apparently (I don't know where I got this from, Trinny and Susanna maybe) the difference between the dress sense of young women and older women is 'accessories'.
If you look at women in the street, you'll see that it's right; older women tend to use less accessories (belts, scarves, jewellery etc) than younger ones, and the older women who DO accessorise well, usually look more youthful.
I must look ancient as I tend to stick with the same small earrings, small necklace and one ring, no belt/scarf/jangling beads etc, so my new plan is to get accessorising and knock 30 years off my age.0
