 I don't understand how any bank can justify £100 in charges, even a personal phone call to inform you of this or a letter, the bank staff are already being paid to do this! Hope you get it sorted.

Equally baffling is the way so many banks provide:

    Debit cards
    Cheque books
    Direct debits
    Standing orders
    Faster Payments
    ATMs
    Free withdrawals from competitor ATMs
Staff at the counter to accept your deposit
    Expensive buildings called branches
    Online banking

All for absolutely nothing when you don't go overdrawn!

    Hi,

I have been an HSBC customer for 15 years and moved to First Direct in Jan.

Loyalty to a bank means nothing. It's not like the old days where the longer you had been with the bank, the more preferential treatment you got.

It may be hard to accept at the moment with £100 of charges to pay, but it is your responsibility to manage your personal finances properly. FD make it clear what their charges are, and I suspect you will have to 'suck the mop' on this occasion and be more diligent in future.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

Hi, that wasn't my point, the very person who started this website helped alot of people get back unfair bank charges. I agree you have to be responsible and avoid charges, but some are £38 to let you know A DD couldn't be paid. That as been proved it doesn't cost that, credit card companies brought their charges down to £12.

Ok so you would quite happily have a lot less charges and pay for the stuff stated by opinions4u?

    I think not.

I wonder what percentage of the population would be allowed to take their wages as cash, rather than have it routed through a bank account.

This thought often comes to mind when I view long lists, giving the impression that banks are mightily good to us commoners, with all the freebies they give out.

In my humble view, if I am forced to have my wages paid into a third party institution, it is for the benefit of that institution, not for me.

    Are you being serious?

    - Savings Accounts
    - Safety
    - Debit/Credit Cards
    - Records of Transactions
    - Transferring money to different places (DDs, Bacs)

Also, they're not a non profit organisation, they're the same as any other business. They are there to make money. I have only had to make 1 complaint to a bank (Barclays for Tax Haven ISA delay in opening account). Never have I had any other problems, I suspect thats because I actually look after my money.

Can I just say, my bank is a 30 mile round trip, so I rarely step into the branch, expensive building or not. I have cancelled most of my direct debits as I prefer to have more control on my finances, with my utilities I pay a little more, but feel better about it.

I don't have a cheque book and due to having to have my money paid in a bank, I don't think I'd bother:D
I have a note book and everything I spend goes in there, I have my own records. I used to always get paid by the wages office in a humble brown envelope and I really felt the worth of my dosh!!!

Yes, very serious. Perhaps slightly too serious for some to comprehend! :D

As for the list you produce, Lokolo, I should be able to have all that by matter of choice, not by necessity!

It's a good job you have the time to manage everything like that. The vast majority would have extreme difficultly remembering what date various bills are due to be paid, then getting the cash out and trotting off to the post office or each institution seperately like something out of the 1900's
If you will the end, you must will the means.
