  • yes, do call the vet for advice, I dont think there is likely to be much difference between five months and six months.

You really do not want an unplanned litter of pups, or the risk of pregnancy at such a young age, and an unplanned litter of staffies is sadly very hard to find good homes for... so many of them are bred irresponsibly and (as I am sure you know) are the breed most likely to end up dumped or abandoned, most likely to end up in the pounds, and most likely to be put to sleep, as often no one wants to rehome them.
  • and being in a cage wont stop it happening either! where theres a will theres a way! My friends dog got preggers through a fence!
I might be crazy but I'm not stupid....

I had the same problem with cats. The vets receptionist said 6 months although most places do from 5 months. She said it was a dominance thing (both are males) but she didn't have to deal with being woken up in the night seeing a little !!!! bouncing up and down with the other one underneath. So they were both done, again told dominance thing, the humping will slowly die off, won't stop right away. Well it did, they went from doing it a lot to totally stopping :)

I would call your vet and explain what is happening. I believe the reason some wait a tad longer is just to make sure the dog is mature enough, and clearly he is. They may well be happy to do sooner. If not, call round and find a vet that will. Until then, I wouldnt leave them together unattended.
