I have checked the fuse inside the car and it is fine.

But in the fusebox by the battery.... I only have 3 fuses - fuse D isn't there at all :confused::confused::confused::confused:...

    Strange.

However, Ford made a number of changes to their wiring on the Escort during it's lifetime. If theres no fuse there, don't worry about it.

Interestingly I was looking at an Escort yesterday that has a completely different interior fusebox.
On that one, it was fuse 9 that controlled the radiator fan whilst fuse 22 controlled the electric windows (both 30A)
Fuse 9 on a later vehicle controls the ABS (also 30A)

On the cover plate of the fuse box in the car it shows a sign like a bottle of liquid and then a fan inside it - that's def fuse 22.

I don't have the luxury of electric windows - unfortunately ;)

Or better still, get a genuine replacement from a Ford main dealer who will know which one you need just from the registration number of the car. :)

    Thanks for that tip ;)
Rang the car parts place and they told me there's 3 different types for my car, most expensive of which is about £18.... rang Ford and they know exactly which one and it's £13 and be in tomorrow - and they are near my work too.

Made my life much easier than trying to work out what one I need :D

Thanks. Then just need to sort out the relay/wiring issue as to whatever else is stopping it coming on! ;)

Just a quick question - is it possible that the ecu is confused by me bridging the switch? Could that be why it only worked for two days? If so, do I have to get the computer and pod to reset it or is there any other way like disconnecting the battery?

Or am I just clutching at straws hoping I can sort it for free/almost free?!!!

The fan basically has a direct connection to the battery and therefore does not go anywhere near the ECU!
The ecu will not be confused by bridging the fan switch as thats exacly what the fan switch does!

OK that's alright then :D, it's just someone else suggested the ecu was confused and that me bridging it might have confused it ;)

My ford has suddenly started to overheat :( The temp gauge on the dash goes up and up (till I put the heaters on inside the car to bring it down again). But when you get out of the car there's no obvious steam or anything.

It has happened since being stuck in traffic recently. I think the engine cooling fan isn't cutting in.

I have checked oil, water/coolant levels etc and that is all fine. I've had a new rad and new water pump a couple of months ago.

About a year ago we had a new switch put on (no idea what it was called :o) for the fan and all had been working well up till now :o

When the engine's cold you can manually move the fan with your hands, so it doesn't seem to be seized at all.

Can anyone help with ideas of what to do/try (girly easy descriptive instructions please :D)?

    Thanks.
  • [QUOTE=stevo*09;36303985 take wiring off back of cooling fan put a fused live link to fan straight from battery dont forget fuse at least 10amps if fan works trace wires to relay check relay if ok keep following back to fuse box:j
