Thanks goldspanners. No it's only on when the ignition is on.

Thanks everyone for your help, saved me lots of money going to a garage to get it sorted.

Will try and get the bit next week as soon as I'm paid :D

Right so for Saturday and Sunday the fan was running every time the ignition was on.....

    Now it's not :(

I've checked that the wire hasn't fallen out with my dodgy tape methods - it's still there but no fan turning on at all :(

    fuses seem ok still.

    I hate cars :(

I think a new one would probably cost about £150 as I think it only comes as a fan & shroud assy.

It may also be necessary to remove the front ARB to provide access to remove the assy, but that might all be possible within the hour labour estimate (unless water pipes also have to be disconnected to allow access ... then the'll probably flush & refill with new antifreeze too)

OP - also check the relay when checking the fuse (and all wiring). Hopefully you wont need a new fan. :)

Ok how do I check the relay? I'm a girl - might need pictures to help :rotfl:

Yeah I guess - kinda hoping that there might be something else cheaper gone wrong but no idea what :rotfl:wishful thinking I know!!

It's been an expensive year - 3 new tyres, new radiator, new waterpump.... now this

If it hadn't just passed the MOT I'd be putting looking for another car!! :p
(not that I've got the money for that either mind you:()

Actually I've just checked. I don't think the Escort fan is controlled via a relay :o

But there are two fuses protecting the fan.

One is in the fusebox to the lower right of the steering colum, accessible from inside the car. Fuse no 22 - 30A

The other is located in the additional fusebox next to the battery (it only contains 6 large fuses)
The cooling fan is fuse D, which is a 50A fuse.

... but I suspect it's the fan itself that is now gone, sorry. :(

Thanks. I didn't know there was a second fuse box :o
    Will check that in case....

This post suggests there might be a relay

but yeah I pretty much figured I'm gonna be rearranging my DMP payment for next month - again :(

Why does the fan have to go in summer, otherwise I'd could just keep going for a while with the heaters on inside the car :(

I have checked the fuse inside the car and it is fine.

But in the fusebox by the battery.... I only have 3 fuses - fuse D isn't there at all :confused::confused::confused::confused:

Checked the plug that I shorted out and there is no volts going to either hole of the plug even with ignition in position 1.
