what to wear onboard a thomson destiny cruise?

Options
Hi there everyone, I will be off on the med cruise from palma in 3 weeks time and i am starting to get stuff together to wash ready for packing and i am starting to get a bit confused with what to take!
I am 25 and female my oh is 29 and male and our dd is 21 months. I am planning on taking things like shorts, vests and sundresses to cover up my swimwear during the day and things like linen trousers and more evening type tops or casual tops which i will dress up with jewellery and sandals.
OH is more of a problem as on a typical restaurant night out over here he would probably wear jeans and smart shirts and shoes. from reading reviews and questions on other websites it seems jeans would be totally unacceptable on any night of the cruise.
I have a feeling that most of the people answering may be slightly older than ourselves and perhaps don't wear jeans at home so think it's not right to wear them on holiday. I am looking for some advice from travellers similar in age to ourselves who have been of cruises recently
so basically my main questions are :
are jeans ok if worn with shoes and shirts/ smart polo shirts?
will sandals be ok in the evening or will i need heels?
will i need to dress dd smartly in the evenings?
I will look forward to hearing peoples thoughts

dress code for evening, is usually formal - all men will be expected to wear shirt and smart trousers, thought tie isnt essential

id say the dress code is similar to what you would wear to an evening wedding reception, so dressy for the women, and no jeans for the men

sandals would be ok, as long as they were evening wear ones, so not birkinstocks or styles like that - more strappy and diamonte

  • I would slightly disagree.

remember, if you go to the buffet for any meal you can 'wear what you want'.

In the restaurant I have seen men in smart jeans/shirts. I would say the only night when that isn't acceptable is Captain's dinner thingy.
Always on the hunt for a bargain.

The dress code during the evening varies and Cruise News will tell you whether the evening is formal or informal. 'Informal' is smart casual (including long trousers for gentlemen).
'Formal' nights such as the Captains' cocktail party and gala dinner lets you pull out all the stops if you wish. Dinner jackets and cocktail dresses will fit right in and gentlemen should at least wear a jacket and tie. There is one formal night on a seven-night cruise.

Jeans,Dockers,Chinos etc with smart shirt or polo will be fine most nights for guys, long rather than short is the key usualy on ships, allthough if you don't use the main dining rooms shorts usualy can be worn at night, more common in the heat of the summer(med) and caribbean but most ships keep the aircon on cool so longs work best inside anyway.

Formal night the expectation is to try a bit harder up to full Tux/posh frock but you can get away with less, dark suits are common,

Even then if you want to stay casual you can, been a while since we did a thomson, but some ships like you to avoid the main dinning rooms on formal night if not smartened up.

    sandals on girls are fine.

Kids are OK in just about anything but some parents seem to go over the top.

There are some that like to think they are the dress code police, it's your holiday, been on trips where some never get out of the shell suite they eat in the buffet and have a great time.

Note this geneal policy is fine for RCI,Princess,Celebrity,NCL(even more casual is ok), and others.

thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm sure we will be ok now i have a bit of inside info!
As you have said getmore4less, it is our holiday and i won't let it be spoilt by wondering if we are dressed correctly every night of the week.
I think we will be avoiding the captains cocktail night because i don't think oh can fit a suit into our case, so we will use the buffet that night. we will probably use the buffet a few other nights too maybe use the waitered restaurant every other night so we don't have to get too dressed up for the whole week.

jeans is a No No if you are going to the main restaurant where they serve you your meal. you can dine in the other less formal restaurant, but one pair of black trousers and a few shirts and he will be sorted....i have been on the Destiny....its fine...

I have been on the Destiny too, as well as the Spirit. There will only be one formal night so don't worry about it. On other nights some people dress up, but many wear 'smart casual' which really means no jeans or shorts. Casual trousers and polo shirts are fine, that's what I wore on those nights.

Don't miss out on the Seven Seas restaurant, the Lido buffet is a much poorer option. On the Destiny it is an outdoor area, closed in with awnings to keep the wind off. It is also where the chavs go. (Yep, they go cruising these days!) The restaurant is great, the waiters brilliant, and the food pretty good too.

The Destiny, unlike the Spirit, has fixed seating for evenings. My advice is go for the late sitting and get on a table for 6 next to a window. You can do this when you board, they have a table set up outside the restaurant for this but many people don't bother so end up with less of a choice. Seating for breakfast and lunch is open seating.

My tip is to find the Sky Bar early on. It's tucked away at the top of the ship but it is nice for a relaxing drink and the best views. It is accessed via a lift behind Blake's Bar and many people never find it.;)

I will be having the early sitting for dinner as we have a child under two and she will be eating with us, she will be alseep by the late sitting.
I suspect it may be a sweeping generalisation to say that if you don't want to get dressed up and choose the buffet instead you will be seen as a chav. I think we may be younger than the average passenger on there and i'm starting to get the feeling that we may seen as chavvy for dressing in what is comfortable and suits our age. As i have said earlier, at the end of the day we are on holiday and i do hope it won't be ruined by us panicking we are being judged on what we are wearing by other passengers.
I would say that if a smart pair of jeans worn with shoes and a shirt is acceptable for restaurants in the uk then i can't see why it would be frowned upon on board.
thanks for the tip about the sky bar, i'm sure we will use it on nights when we want little one to have a quiet night but on the whole i think we will make it into the can can lounge most nights for the shows

    Hi,

we were on the Destiny in Feb ( myself and OH both 30)
we ate in the dining room most nights

hubby wore linen trousers,or chino type, with a casual shirt / polo shirt

didn't bring jeans and I don't recall seeing anyone in jeans TBH

would have been too hot anyway ( Caribbean!)

    Have a lovely time,wish I was going

There won't be much for your under 2 yr old to do :(

    wasn't a problem for us as our 2 are 13 and 7
but thought they were definitely lacking on things for little ones to do :( ( only saw 1 child under about age 3 ,and it was feb half term !)
The kids clubs for older ones, however were fab

even the pool isn't suitable as was freezing and salt water

    Have a lovely time :)

PS yes there will no doubt be "chavs" ,they are everywhere on every holiday you go to ,no matter how "expensive" the destination !
