OK i've just bought a second hand car my first time buying one myself lol

Anyway i bought it today handed over the money filled in the new keeper details they signed it etc and i've got my V5C until then, handed over the cash got the key it has 8 months MOT on it. Then they said they would bring me round the actual certificate tomorrow as they'd forgotten it  now i know i am DUMB i should of asked for the money back given the key back and waited until i had the mot certificate i just assumed because the MOT circular certificate is on the car that it was all ok.

However now i am worried as when 'cooing and brooding' over it i noticed the edge of the reg plate was a bit loose so i thought i'd get partner to stick/screw it on more secure and then on him closer inspecting it, it looks as though it is stuck on to another plate?!?!?! It isn't like this on the back it's just one plate?? now i'm really worried that the reg isn't for that actual car the reg plate is on quite secure in the middle but i'm wondering if i should rip it off to see what this mysterious plate is underneath as we couldn't tell if it had any letters/digits on it or if its a duplicate or just blank?? OR if i'm just being ubber paranoid???

Any advice pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee i'm really worried

Got another question.......I've just read that i can go to the MOT garage and get a copy of the certificate for £10 fee, can i do this now or do i need to wait for the logbook to come back in my name???

Check the MOT online using the info from the V5 - that may assist a little.

Pull the plate off then repost.

  • There is no point in checking the MOT site anyway based on a possibly false plate.

Do you have a log book etc

Best bet is to pull it off. there could be a genuine reason and at the worst it will cost the cost of a new plate.

Much better than ignoring it and discovering its a cut and shut or stolen or whatever and facing legal action.
  • If someone had stuck two number plates together it would be pretty obvious with out the need to rip it off your car.

Number plates are basically just a yellow/white sticker with characters printed on them. These are then stuck onto the plastic. If the person who originaly made the plate didn't line it up quite right it might look like someone had tried to stick over the original.

Easiest way to check is do a HPI check. I.e. compare the chassis number stamped onto the car (usually on the engine bay or around the door sill/pillar.) vs the number plate. This should of course all tie to the V5 and the MOT when it materialises.
  • Yes it is two number plates stuck together, the thick plastic part which the plate sticker is stuck onto on cars, there are two of them is what i mean :-\. I'm going to check the chassis number now lemonade, thanks. Ashamed to admit it but didn't even know about that i'm sooooooo bad when it comes to cars i know nothing :(

  • Still no sign of MOT certificate . I've compared the chassis number which was on their booking appointment page for the MOT. (They'd left this in the car glovebox) However i didn't notice it on the number plate?

I'm really worried now though because the registered keepers name (who i bought it from) on the VC5 is not the same as this DVA vehicle test appointment letter i've found in the car? raghhhhhh i'm so silly why didn't i wait until i had all the paperwork with it, i've certainly learnt a lesson, but what can i do now or what should i do as i do have doubts about the car and don't want to get into trouble myself? Although i could be worrying over nothing?
