if you buy your equipment - like litter & scratching post from places like Aldies, Liddles you can save a lot of money (pets @ Home is the next cheapest for litter but not other equipment or food). Argos is v cheap for feeding bowl, automatic cat feeder & covered litterbox. Then subscribe to online food suppliers & buy in bulk - u can save lots!
Supermarkets & Pets @ home I think are the most expensive for food.
Our cats drink out of the pond - or the dogs bowl never their own
Rather than whiskas milk, buy a litre of lactofree (£1.36 found with the milk, just the same stuff) as its milk without lactose, exactly what whiskas milk is!

You can also support local pet shops, you'll find they do offer advice and you're more likely to purchase products that are suitable and actually last.
Cat posts are a typical one, Argos sell kitten posts that won't last and people think 'ah my cat isn't interested' yes he is but he will want one he can fully stretch on.
Also with independents trying asking for discount try and find who is in charge though.
Good luck
Or buy it online but buying the right product is cheaper than the wrong ones
