I think it's a combination things: I did read somewhere that lot of cats prefer to drink running water and others appear to dislike freshly-drawn water from the tap because they dislike the fluoride. Giving them cooled water from the kettle appears to burn the fluoride off

Cats don't like to have their water bowl by the food so you could try moving the water bowl to see if that encourages him to drink more.

Great suggestion. We keep the water bowl in a different room to the cat food and all three cats drink lots of water this way. Our black and white puss, Stephen has a charming way of dangling his paw in the water bowl and flicking it at us if he feels the water isn't quite fresh enough.

wow loads of responses, I have been reading the advice but didn't get a chance to actually reply.

I've so far put some water outside, which is now just overflowing with rain water, there's a few other places where water collects in both my garden and the neighbours garden. I've moved his bowl to somewhere away from his food and I have given him cooled boiled water too! Hopefully he will drink, if not, I think he will be ok from his wet food.

thank you for all the help, this is my first cat (my parents had one but it doesnt count).

i had a cat a long time ago before the special cat milk was on the market the vet sid that cows milk is bad for them but a little watered down is ok.

also my cat liked to drink cold tea with milk and sugar, and beef bovril cooled down.
  • I would feed him Wet in the morning and dry in the evening. Cats aren't big drinkers but it is very important they keep hydrated. It seems to be a common misconception that cats should be on dry only. I would give him Almo Nature or Applaws both good quality wet foods in the morning and Orijen if you can find it in the evening ( Low in Carbs again v.important). Otherwise look for a cat water fountain - Pet Mate produce the most reliable and simple one to clean.

I would try a water fountain. My use the smaller Cat IT one
  • Catit are usually at good prices but if the water is run low then it can burn out the powerhead also if it isn't level it won't run evenly. Cat Mate Fountains have the powerhead situated deeper than the rest of the fountain so that if the water level drops it will drop to the lower level and still keep the powerhead wet.

None of my cats drink out of the water bowl... 2 of them can frequently be found in the bath or sink licking the plug hole... and the other one I don't know where she drinks but she's never been dehydrated so I'm guessing she's a puddle muncher...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • I think if you wait a week you may find offers on the Pet Mate as a wholesaler is running a promo this month. Ask your local pet shop in a week or two.
