Options
i think i posted this in the wrong place earlier so try again
Hi
I really have to get some house contents insurance quickly as i will be going bankrupt soon (actually it will be a lilla that i apply for which is low income low assets ) iam getting help and advise for this on the bankrupcy boards.
Obviously when this happens i will really need insurance as i think i may not be able to get credit for a while and iam scared incase any off my appliances break down etc.
Iam living alone in a two bedroom house on benefits so i dont want to pay a fortune
I have never had contents insurance ever so dont know whats what !
Iam also trying to reduce my outgoing income as much as possible too at the moment and was thinking that the £7.99 a month i pay for my lap top to the whatever happens policy i took out with currys when i purchased it , could actually go to better use ie ..contents which may cover more items ?.
Iam with Quidco so would or could go through them

welcome any help and advise please

thank you

Have a shop around and get some quotes. Before you do that, work out roughly how much everything you own would cost to replace new.

    worriedsik,

Do you live in council tenancy? If so there might be a scheme you could purchase cover though that could be a good deal for the low levels of cover you might need. Otherwise you will probably be ok purchasing via a price comparison website though check carefully the cover, excess etc before you buy. See the MSE section on home insurance for a good way to get a good deal.

May I suggest you read this:
    http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/products/insurance/types/possessions/contents_insurance.html
    and even this:
    http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/products/insurance/new_to_insurance.html

However, I note the home insurance one actualy isn't very helpful.

Typicaly your posessions are covered for a standard range of "perils" - i.e. events or forces that cause a loss to be suffered - including:
    Fire
    Theft
    Flood
Storm (i.e. high winds, usualy over 45mph)
Escape of water from a fixed heating installation or pipes
Impact by aircraft or objects dropped from them, falling objects, branches etc, motor vehicles or animals
    Subsidance

Cover is typicaly provided for everything on a new for old basis, other than clothes and bedding where a deduction for age/wear and tear is made. This is why the above poster has advised you to value everything you own on a replacement basis.

You will also have some additional typical standard covers (though this can vary policy to policy in the limits offered and whether cover is offered at all) such as:
Personal liability - typicaly £2million - for any personal liability
Tenants liability - liability as a tenant, though not for rent etc
Contents temporaritly removed from the home - but not "personal posessions" where you are walking around with stuff, just when you are at a friends home for example.
Food in the freezers to a limited sum against the failure of the freezer (not the freezer its self)
Loss of keys (so replcement of keys and locks)
    Contents in the garden
    Money
    Credit cards
