Help with Neighbours Caravan

I have a neighrbour who is really scruffy, however they have recently cleaned up the garden but left their drive was left a complete mess.

His house actually backs onto the side of mine but his drive runs parallel with mine. His house is also slightly elevated. The other day I returned home and he had started laying sharp stones on the drive we hoped this would sort it.

I have come home ten minutes ago and he has placed a monstrous static caravan on the drive and told my wife he has planning permission for it. The thing towers over our drive and house and affects the light coming in, it looks awful. He has said he will raise the fence to hide it but this means his fence will be as high as a static caravan
at about 24ft long by 10ft high. A touring van would not have been so bad. He has stated it will be there for 8 months and there is nothing we can do about it.

Its blocking light right across my garden and living room, its so big its almost up to the height of my sons bedroom at the front of the house.

Any advice would be apreciated as I'm not having this. We have phoned the council but have not heard back.

You need to speak to the planning department, maybe also look at your deeds re restrictions and fence heights.
Who's he planning to accommodate there:eek:

What did you say to him to make him say there is nothing you can do about it?
Presumably if he had applied for planning permission, you would have seen the publicly displayed notices?
Sure someone will come along soon who knows this stuff,in the meantime, try not to get into conflict with him, even though he sounds a pain in the rear, smile,I am sure it is solvable by the council/county council.

Telling your wife he has planning permission and actually having planning permission are two different things. Sounds like your neighbour is too lazy to apply for planning permission.

Surely if he had applied for planning permission, then the local authority would have sent details of his application to the neighbouring households, especially you as the immediate neighbour?

I would ring the local authority, or check online, so see if he has

A quick anonymous call to your planning dept should give you a bit of info regarding how high a fence is allowed to be if put between driveways. A separate call asking whether an enormous caravan is allowed to be parked up on the drive by your wife would help.

If planning seems to indicate he's in the wrong, then see what you want to do about it. Don't give the planning dept names or phone numbers etc - you don't want to start a fight with this guy by accident!

If the caravan isn't to be used for a seperate residence then I don't think planning permission is needed.

However, as others have mentioned, a phone call to your local council will let you know, as it will about the fence height.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

You can view planning applications and refusals online. Sometimes just googling the postcode will bring cases up so it might be worth checking there although I doubt if your neighbour has got planning permission. Definitely ring your council tomorrow because if it is blocking your light then maybe something can be done about it. I assume this guy isn't the type of person you could pop round to see and have a friendly little chat to try and sort it out without involving authorities? Also, your neighbour may be breaching lease terms if the house is rented or leasehold.

    Hi,

I would have thought he would need permission to place a static caravan on his land .... also some places (ie, where we live ... have a rule that you can not keep caravans on the property).

Also could the rule about being allowed light to your property work here .... the one the government brought in to stop tall trees blocking light to property?

He might also be breaching restrictive covenants if the property is freehold. My property is a private freehold, but restrictions are in the title that no caravans (amongst other things like commercial vehicles etc) are to be kept on the property

He is not a very nice person, always setting fires in his garden, he used to run a taxi business from his house (until someone nicked a few of them). I'm not bothered about upsetting him as he isn't bothered the other way around.

The guy is murder, he is always up to somthing, I'll phone planning tomorrow. My worry is that we can't do anything.

The guy who delivered the caravan told my wife when he saw what was happening that he would not be happy and that its knocked 10k of the price of our house.

If it had been a touring caravan then fair enough but this monstrosity is terrible. My wifes also pregnant and now she is stressed with this.
