Virgin billing

I cancelled virgin tv a year last april. They told me to keep the box as a freeview box, so it's been unplugged and put away since then.
A couple of months ago I changed phone to BT.
Now I've had a bill for a large tv package that I don't want or need. I've just phoned them and they said that the freeview was only valid if I had a phoneline with them and so I've got to pay for the last month's tv package, and for another month.
I was never told that I'd have to pay the TV when I cancelled the phone, even when I called them about the phone cancellation. When I cancelled the TV they didn't say that it wasn't being cancelled, just given free with the phoneline. I thought that they just couldn't be bothered collecting the box and that it was now a freeview box, like you can buy anywhere for £15.
Is there anything I can do about it, I really can't afford the money for two months tv.
