Claiming from Royal Mail

I have made a claim with Royal Mail in the past and they asked me to produce receipts. In our business, we personalise our items to the customers requirements. Sometimes this work can be very time consuming getting layouts sorted and engraving, so we are putting a considerable amount of added value to the items and not just box shifting.

How would I get around this with Royal Mail? Can I put in an invoice from my company to my company for the engraving time which can then be added to the claim?

    I wish you well with your claim but my experience, on a number of times in the past, is that they are not known to be at all generous. Like trying to offer a book of stamps in compensation which in our case nowhere near reflected the costs to us.

    Hopefully others may have some good advice?
    A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.

    They have lost over £100 in last few weeks of my products and all I get back is 6 first class stamps, im taking them to court soon if it carries on.

    So I am not the only one - exactly what they have done to me - book of six stamps.

    I stopped using Royal Mail / Parcelforce 10 years ago because of this.
    Always use couriers now more expensive but you get what you pay for.........

    There are some disgruntled sellers over on the ebay board as well who are having claims lost or refused.

    i totally agree with you on that one Royal mail are rubbish with compensation.
    i send parcels to hospitals containing knitted items which has been made by volunteers and as we are not registered charity we have to fundraise so we can send parcels out,

    We send our parcel 2nd class recorded and they lose so many of my parcels and they always send me flipping stamps which sometimes don't even cover the postage costs not alone the items that was on the parcels,

    I'm a bit confused.

    You made an item. You sold it for £x. Item gets lost, so you refund the seller £x and upon showing receipt to Royal Mail for £x, you hopefully get £x back from them. Unless you're selling these items at a loss I don't see what the problem is, because surely if the buyer still wants the item you'll get the profit of TWO items, and if the buyer doesn't want it then you're in the exact same position as if it never got lost.

    I'm not trying to side with Royal Mail here, a book of stamps for lost recorded mail is annoying. I remember reading somewhere that they're exempt from liability in some places where a normal delivery company would be, including for things like Special Delivery. Anyone know the truth to this?

    What I was asking is this:

    We buy in an item for £X. Customer buys it from us for £Z but wants it personaliing to their own specifications. We could potentially spend 4 hours work personalising the items (Y). Send it with Royal Mail and they loose it. Put in a claim but they will only give us the £X that we paid for it. What happens to the 4 hours work (Y) that we put into making it unique. We then have to re-do the item - so another 4 hours work (Y) and cost of item again (Z).

    Can we put in an invoice to our company from our company for the 4 hours work (Y) that we have spent to make the item unique.

    That was my question.

    I see what you're getting at, I was riding on the assumption that they would give you £Z, which I'm sure you agree would be just fine. You seem to believe that they would give you £X.

    I think you should wait for someone more knowledgeable in this to come along and answer this with more certainty, but for example, I was under the impression that if you sold something on eBay for £Z then you would show them the listing and that is what they would give you, unless you sold it insanely above market value. This is the same thing minus the eBay, show them a copy of the customer's receipt and that is what they'll give you...I think. Like I said, hopefully someone else will give you a more certain answer :)

    Thanks DrScotsman. No, they will only give me £X and I have to send copies of my receipts but obviously I don't have any invoices for the work we have done. That is why I was wondering if we could submit an invoice for the work we have done as well as sending copies of the initial outlay invoices. I would be happy with that.
