    hi folks,

I'm reviving this thread because I used to get my soapnuts from Lakeland, but they don't stock them anymore - no wonder, a 500g box used to last me six months. I'm also about to start using re-usable nappies on my first baby and would love to hear more experiences of using soapnuts on nappies. The recommended wahing temperature for re-usables is 30-40 degrees, so hot wash shouldn't be a problem (I've used nuts at up to 60 degrees and not had any bother). Also I've never had a problem with discolouration, so if anyone else had I'd be keen to hear details. And lastly any recommendations on suppliers? I've seen the one at the beginning of this thread - are they any good?

    Many thanks!
  • Hi caelshorn,

We have been using soapnuts for many years now with all three of our babies! We are extremely happy with them. They soften the clothes and nappies so there is no need for conditioner (so you save money there too). We buy our soapnuts from soapnuts.co.uk (they usually arrive within a day or two) and we are very happy with the way they wash. I found this link about using soapnuts with nappies...its much better at explaining it than me!

For really stubborn stains we used to use soda crystals or borax (whenever i could find it) but nowadays when we buy our soapnuts we buy a natural stain removal bar from them too which works a treat. I hope this helps hun!

I want to make some soap nut liquid. You have to boil up the nuts in water on the stove for about 20 mins. Will it damage my pots? I am assuming not as it's just a soapy liquid but I want to make sure. I will be using a stainless steel pot. Will it cause any staining?
    Cheers

Having just read this thread from the beginning, yes you can still use vinegar however you shouldn't need to as the nuts will help soften your laundry. (Will still help with lime scale)

Unfortunately, not very well. I found they just didn't wash very well and after a few wears, my clothes began to smell under the arms etc.
I now make laundry liquid, you can find the recipe here: http://notjustgreenfingers.wordpress.com/2012/09/21/new-allotment-paths-and-laundry-liquid/

It's works really well and I got approx. 71 washes out of it, which worked out at just 8.5p per wash, which is great in my book....and my excema has been fine with it.:T:T:T:T
