COSTCO - Do you think it's cheap?

  • Costco is great if you can be disciplined. Some of the items can be one-off offers so there is a temptation to buy it because 'it is there and it might not be next time'. I suspect I spend what I have saved on things that I didn't really need......

Went to Costco Edinburgh earlier today. TBH im not too impressed anymore. apart from the kirkland stuff everything is rather expencive. their cheapest bit was the cafe but there baked tatties were nothing to brag about nor was the soda. That place has gone down hill since i was last there. Also no free samples :(

Costco do a great celebration cake for about £10, its huge and sickly (just like I like it!) and you can have a message put on it. There is about five different designs and lots of different colours for the frosting.

I tend to get beef mince, which I have never found better quality, small and large cartons of orange Juice, cases of water and loo rolls.

As another poster said, you have to check to prices with the supermarkets and also work out if its worth it and also the room to store it all.

They still do coffee and pastries for business members at opening time at my local Costco!!!

i dont go to costco but do go to makro
you have to have a business to get a card and they are quite strict on it theses days too

i dont normally buy unless i see things reduced on their makro mail leaflets that comes through the door every couple of weeks
i also paid 3.50 for my tins of nescafe latte and cuppucino which is quite a saving as i am nr to having this stuff on a drip stm ;D
i get large box's of washing powder and fabric conditioner, toilet rolls in bulk too
i buy meat from them too or i get it at wholesale price delivered which again is a massive saving.

i would also add that not everything is cheaper than big supermarkets its just handy to have knowing that you will never run out of toilet roll whislt waiting to get paid ;D

  • I have found that the meat in my local butcher is much better and no more expensive than Costco and the butcher knows where it has come from!!
  • Tyres are good value from costco especially the cost of balancing and new valve as a lot of tyre places use these to bump up the price ,but costco do not do tracking which is annoying.
  • only cheap for certain bulk buying products and if u have the capacity to store it at home. such as soap powder, hand made cakes are cheap too, but non foods ur best of shopping elsewhere for example the net is the most powerful shopping tool for any customer, so why bother wasting time shopping on the high street when u have the internet at ur finger tips

Just bought some tyres this weekend and they were ten pounds cheaper than anywhere else. They only sell Michellin so they probably negotiate special deals with the manufacturer. They even run offers during the year which can reduce the cost of four tyres by 20% - not bad at all. If you ask any tyre retailer I think you will find that they recommend Michellin becasue they last longer - so even if they are more expensive to start with I think you save in the longer run.
Just Tyres did me some Michelins 195-65-15-V for £50 each including valve and balancing, down from normal price of £100. Suitable for Passat.

I like the meat at costco, and the 1/2 sides of salmon!! ; ;D

Hardback books are usually at least £10 cheaper - I have quite a collection now. But the DVD's can work out more expensive ::)

The only thing we've really had to be careful with is the cases of lager. The supermarkets have dropped their prices right down in the past few years, and Costco doesn't seem to have kept up - but at £10.98 :o in Tesco for 24 x 440ml lagers - who needs to travel to Costco!!

I agree that you have to be careful, and budget well, we normally end up spending double what we were anticipating - just because it's there!!
