its official, i'm now 50. Do I qualify?

Ok, Todays the day I hit 50. :j I admit it. I am not ashamed or embaressed to tell people either. Now I know i'm not old but do I really qualify as a Silver Surfer? Do I get any prevlidges now that i'm, hopefully,only just reaching middle age.

Do I have to produce evidence to gain discounts ( are there any?) to support the fact that I have managed to last this long without resulting to tellng everyone that although I look young I have reached a milestone in my life and should be treated with all the respect that comes with it.

Am I now qualified to tell my grandchildren what it was like in the old days, even though they already think I served in one of the great wars and cannot play the latest X Box game.

Will I get young people giving up their seat on the bus for me without the whole bus knowing that I do have a bad back brought on by overworking to pay for the aformentioned young persons job seeker allowence.

Do I have anything to look forward too? Does all the money I have so diligently tried to save now go back to the government to help pay for my increasingly poor lack of health or is there hope after today as I am now constantly told I am going downhill and it's easier than going up.

Does the neibourhood really need to know that amongst it's closed doors lurks a 50 year old trying to be 30 and on Saturday night a party is being thrown to celebrate the fact that I now have to be in bed by 9.30 otherwise I have trouble getting up and that after a couple of ciders I make even the antics of the Saturday night clubbers in the city center look like a Sunday school outing.

Or am I really just realizing that I am a grumpy bloke with issues ? Am I really a Silver Surfer?

You can qualify as a Silver Surfer due to your age but not if you think we're all old fogies, I'm afraid!

I'm 60 next January and get my State Pension but as far as I'm concerned 60 is the new 30 and I'm looking forward to spending it!

I believe that today is the start of my life and I'm gonna run with it.

It will be an honour to be inaugurated into the world of silver surfers and I will not let you all down. ( unless I can embarress my kids with my antics !! ):D

This is so true!! and such a bonus!!! Plus when I got to 50 (now 54) I suddenly didn't care what I said to people (believe me I am a mouse!) my favourite phrase has become "I'd like to speak to the manager please"!!

I'm 54 and I'm the same.
Since hitting 50 I suddenly turned from a mouse as you say into this very feisty woman who won't take no for an answer and is not afraid to say no to other people.
It's great,I just wish it had happened to me sooner,my life would have been so much easier.

I too have just reached the magical age 50 this week and must admit that I don't feel any different (YET). I agree with most of the things said by Marlinsapalu but feel insulted by the assumption that the 'young people on the bus are on job seekers allowance'. My son is fortunate in that he drives a new BMW and is not on job seekers allowance but certainly does not make comments like this one about the other young people he sees travelling on buses.

I have noticed local councils advertising various initiatives for the "over fifties" such as daytime classes, keep fit, even a day out with a safer neighbourhoods theme. I suspect there must be some EU grants or something for councils to arrange over 50s activities. However, when you investigate closely, you find that within these groups any freebies or discounts tend to apply to the over 60s or over 65s contingent.

Or does anyone know better? Are there in fact some freebies or discounts available for 50-60 year olds? (I have read the sticky re discounts for 50s/60s - couldn't find anything relevant there.)
