Personally I'd give them an extra £100. If other firms were quoting £1000, you're still getting good value in only paying half price.
At the end of the day a good workman is worth his weight in gold IMO, and who knows, you may want them back to do something else........a bit of good-will can go a long wayI let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
We had a chap come in to knock down a wall and rebuild another bit so that our kitchen worked. He also dug up and resited our downstairs toilet waste. That cost £2000. I was happy with that because he was the only person willing to quote and it took him ages. I asked him about getting our gas hob fitted when the kitchen was in. He said it would be £60 which was what we paid in our flat. He had seen how much work we had to do and said to just ring him when we were ready. I rang him on 22nd December (we were having family for christmas). He was there the following evening with his plumber because he said we had to have it done for christmas.
When they were doing it I asked if they wanted cash or cheque so had to go to the shop (and pay the flipping machine!) and get cash. I was so happy that I gave them a bottle of red wine each as it was christmas.Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -

I think this is the best advice given so far.
My DH is a joiner and has often the job has run over, he always sticks to his word re price but I know we are very very appreciative if someone gives him extra to recognise the fact that it took longer.0
