depends if you want more work doing in the future!
If you fill their bellys with a bacon sandwich in the morning, keep giving them cups of tea... with a nice spread for dinner, im sure they will leave feeling very refreshed and glad.
If you wait til after they finish they might rush it, and not do a 100% job, so don't eb shy to get in there straight away!
:-)
Just cause its cash doesnt mean they wont pay tax, and they claim benefits, they just might not want the delay of the cheque clearing etc. Cant spend it in the pub afterwards lolPlan

£400 for 3 men seems also very reasonable to me.
After they paid taxes and NIC (if they will) there isn't that much left.
If the quotes were much higher, I would probably give £200 each (so £600 in total).
I think that is fair price for 2 days of hard work.0 -
But cash in hand may mean that they are not paying tax and are even claiming benefits. I think £133 cash in hand for a days work is very high, even in the South East. (I agree that £133 for two days work is not high.)
Did they have insurance for doing that work? Probably best to just put at the back of your mind if it is down now, but that could have been a serious problem.
Since when does "cash in hand" mean that they are not paying tax??
It's not about the form of payment but their honesty. That is their problem.
many companies prefer cash just because bank charges are costing them fortune!0 -
I said it may mean... And if the person is a family man claiming tax credits and he is not paying tax on it then by definition he will have to fraudulently claim the benefit because he can't declare to them earnings that he hasn't declared to the tax man.
If you think that whatthey have done is worth more than £400, by all means pay them more.0 -
I agree with some of the suggestions - a crate of beer and an extra £50 each. Especially if they do a great job.0

They quoted you for the job, you agreed. End of.
If they had done there sums right first time they would have known it would have taken them 2 days not 1 and quoted you accordinly.
If it was a normal tradesperson you wouldnt expect to be paying out extra if the job ran over.
So NO i wouldnt pay them anymore and i wouldnt give them a token gift. There getting £400 for 2 days work.
Thats more than most people are getting at the minute and im sure they will be greatful for that.:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!:T0 -
if your happy with the job they are doing i would give them a little extra, £400 seems good to me, give them £20 each as a token of good will then thats everybody happy HTH.. xxx:money: :A0

Having read all the replies, I think I'm going to pay them the £400 as agreed, and get them some crates of beer. I'm a little uncomfortable about paying more than we agreed (in cash anyway) and frankly if it was a problem for them, they've said something. ( and I'm fairly sure if they had have asked for more half way through I'd have felt a bit agrieved , as we did agree £400 for the job) Also if the quote has been more than £500 DH & I had already discussed that we'd leave it for now and do it another time, due to other bits we're doing in the house we need money for. Thanks for your input, guys.0

Been in construction for 10 years , its a price job so pay what you agreed , a 12 pack of stella each is generous on your part for their extra hard work and lack of complaining.
Everyone is happy .0 -
Cook them a nice lunch/dinner to say thanks?
I agree that £400 for three men for a day is a bargain! I'm in the SE too and I paid that for ONE man for ONE day and he didn;t even do a full day!:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
