as stated before i was in a wrangle with comet - i am glad to report they have now offered me a cash settlement which i have gladly accepted.....just goes to show you should fight your corner and stand your ground no matter how long it takes....

Just bumped into this thread and wanted to add that your local newspaper is really a good weapon in the fight against dodgy stores. Local papers are always short on news so a david against goliath retail/consumer battle always goes down well (or the bully giant against the little old lady). Its amazing how friendly and amenable they become when a reporter rings them or they appear in the local press..
I too would recommend john lewis. excellent service and competitive prices

You really should have just gone to County Court (https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk) and sued the backside of them. Yes you used the goods, but they still have to be of Merchantable Quality and Fit for the Purpose, and so you would have won.
