Why do people like rising house prices?

Because thats thier primary wealth store, given they no longer trust the city / pension providers to provide for them.

Because they've been lulled into a false sense of security. In an enviroment where it was possible to make a positive return on borrowed money with minimal effort.

It's not surprising Martin was berating contributors to this forum, earlier this week.

Not see that, do you possibly have a link?

Forget suppositions about why other people might think differently from you or casting aspersions on their motives. Leave that to the politicians. Human beings are far too complex to be placed in boxes like this and, frankly, I'm surprised you haven't noticed.

I think you need to differentiate between a supposition and a question here - I was simply asking a question. It just seems to me that there are a lot of bitter and twisted people (if the cap fits before I get shouted at) who want the whole economy to implode and so my question was to try and understand why.

For the record I don't necessarily want to see high house prices - thats what everyone always assumes. I just want to see stable house prices.... whilst they are unstable (up or down) no one wants to buy because no one knows whats around the corner so no one can get on with their lives.... its stupid.

I guess my problem is when the papers say the economy is doomed then everyone jumps on it... as soon as the papers say something positive then its not true. People highlight stories that fit their agenda and ignore ones that don't rather than having a balanced view which I am *trying* to do.

I don't like all of the negativity thats on these sort of boards - the sun is shining, I still have my job and my house, my debts are relatively small...... why be negative and worry about what might happen tomorrow or in 10 years.

Seems like some people on here want the UK to be in recession and actually enjoy it....

Are these bitter / jealous non home owners perhaps? Have people struggled in this recession so far or lost their jobs and now they are bitter that things *might* be starting to look just slightly positive again?

Certainly don't enjoy the economy being in recession. Even in good times there are plenty of issues which effect businessess on an individual basis. In bad times it's a lot harder and tougher. Planning and budgeting is greatly out of your hands. So might have a negative slant personally when posting currently.

But that comes from having worked in finance for over 30 years. On one occassion I recall being involved in cutting a 1/3 of the work force of one business. It's not a pleasant or easy task. As you are making decisions which effect peoples lives. People you've worked with closely.

Because a lot of people here feel disenfranchised by a decade long boom that has left them fearing for their jobs, stuck in unsuitable rented accommodation and lacking any realistic opportunity to join a property owning autocracy that tells them constantly that only losers rent; unless prices come down a long way.
