Fallen for the BOGOF ... AGAIN!!

I have just posted on the 'What have you spent today' thread and realised that I need some focused support about my apparent obsession with 'Buy One, Get One Free's'.

I know I have a problem with this as I ran out of food budget for this month on Tuesday and managed to collect enough change together to buy the milk that I needed yesterday. I went to Somerfield, picked up the milk, and then spotted 'Bernard Matthews Chicken Slices' on BOGOF and I use this regularly for my kids lunchboxes. I then saw 2 boxes of PG Tips Teabags for £4.00, another bargin and that's what I usually buy, and then I arrived at the Shreddies cereal (which we all eat) at half price - so in that went too!

I can't work out if it is good to buy these things when they are on offer, if they are what you usually buy, but it takes you over budget - or should I resist and think 'I don't actually need that today' and even though it may not be on offer in 2 weeks when I do need it I mustn't buy it today.

Does anyone else need therapy like me to get over this addiction? Any advice would be gratefully received.

I JUST CAN'T RESIST THE BOGOF'S!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ME PLEASE!

Lewby xx

awww I think you can justify them Lewby as they are items you would normally buy. Just take the amount off next weeks shopping budget and you may end up paying less as you got 2 for 1 :j

I always buy BOGOFs when I see them - as long as they are things I would be buying anyway. I once saved £8.50 on cruncy nut cornflakes :j ...my kids eat tons of them. ....However, I have lost out recently on some handsoap that brought me out in a rash (Boots!) and same with washing up liquids(Tescos). I now have a cupboard full of these......NOTa bargain.....but mostly I gain for sure...it's better to take a long term view as long as it's not costing you money..ie makes you go into expensive overdraft. :o

im very guilty of this if its something you would normally buy then i think its fine as you save in a further on week, it becomes a problem when you have bought it for the sake of it being buy 1 get 1 free something i am guilty off i tend to buy lots of buy1 get 1 free's even though i dont normally buy it or need it and usually these things then go to waste

You should give aaaaaaaaall the mint cornetto's to meeeeee *in a hypnotic kinda voice*

And I don't see the harm with bogofs if it's stuff you use anyway so long as we're not talking buy one plasma screen telly get one free as I think going £1000 over budget is a bit much ;) but a couple of £ IF you are going to use it anyway!!!!!

  • yeah - I think you are justified in going for the special offers when it's things you usually buy, and they're not things that go off.
Since this morning I myself have got a bathroom full of BOGOF bog rolls!

I know how you feel too - I love BOGOF's. I dont have a exact budget so I'm probably not much help, but as long as they are things you normally buy anyway, its ok? We have a 16 month old and I always buy wipes when I see them BOGOF - I refuse to buy one at a time now.

I think you shold re-read your own original post Lewby....you use every single one of those items you "fell for" so really, you've saved money. And good on you! :D

It's only if you are suckered in by things you wouldn't ever ususally buy that you need to have a word with yourself! ;)

  • You need to change how you think of it

BOGOF- actually means buy one at half price
2 for £ XX.XX - actually means buy 2 and pay slighlty less than you would normally for buying 2 (but not much really) (this is the one I used to get sucked into and then get really annoyed by it)
also most places seem to run there offers for longer than a week so you could stock up on half of them one week and the other half the next week.

Yeah I noticed that with Shreddies sometime ago, there was a BOGOF offer for the smaller sized boxes and I thought cool................THEN when I actually worked it outit was dearer than buying the bigger box of Shreddies that wasn't on offer, so that was what I got pheww! icon12.gif

So I now check these offers a bit better, in addition if I really can't afford it, I just get the one. My other problem is space in my house............so this is another aspect that stops me buying them all up icon12.gif I wish you could see one of my family members' house.........she is BOGOF and Lidl's offers mad, to the point that there really isn't any room left to move in the house, and it's miserable when we try to visit cos there's no where to sit!!
