I always grab a stock of those. I've usually got 10-12 packs in the cupboard. One pack of curry noodles and half a tin of marrowfat peas makes a great lunch... and for an evening meal, something a little bit more special, a pack of curry noodles and half a tin of red kidney beans in chilli sauce (used to be 37p/can but they seem to have disappeared in my Tesco).

Nettles (free), Water, teaspoon of marigold stock powder. (cheap) or frozen stock (cost of boiling left overs).

Tuna Mash is a big fave of mine, just mash the cheapest tin of tuna flakes you can find into mash made with smash .. nutritious and delicious.

If you want a meal for two for a quid, mix a tin of Co-Op own brand Irish stew with a tin of value beans.

Also, porridge works as a breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I've never eaten lentils. My mum used to have some shiny orange ones that she would put into the pressure cooker with some nasty bones to make soup ... never fancied that. Kind of put me off lentils.

Didn't know you could get them in tins though. Never seen that.

I steam a lot of potatoes in the microwave. Scrub/halve a big spud, pop it into a microwave steamer white (cut) side up, sprinkle with salt. Nuke for 5 minutes, stand 1-2 minutes, flip them over, nuke for 5 minutes, stand 1-2 minutes, flip them over, nuke for 3-4 minutes, stand for 1-2 minutes ... when they come out top with grated cheddar and the texture is more like genuine baked spuds than if you just microwave them in a paper towel. They're brill.

I always think of Neil off The Young Ones when somebody mentions lentils.

They're overrated, especially later in the season. I once went all hippie with a class of 10 year olds, making nettle soup, with the main ingredient gathered from the school nature reserve. It was way too late in the year and even a carton of fresh cream couldn't save it.

But I made them all have some!:rotfl:

I like them. (ish)I suspect I still eat them out of stubborness and in the belief they are could for me. In fact, as you say, the time to get them is the first of the season: on a mirepoix base, heavy on seasoning its......ok:o mushrooms help, but then you lose the nice colour.

Pick nettle leaves when they're fresh and new. I've made Nettle and Potato Soup and it definitely reminds me of Leek and Potato Soup.

I would also recommend Nettle Gnocchi...yummy!

Gosh, we're all turning Old Style.

    :j

    Regards.

Get an LG Solardom if you want proper baked potatoes from the 'microwave'

It would worry me to think how many dogs had piddled on the nettles.
