I suppose it makes sense with them starting you off on an ATM card before they "upgrade" you to a debit one.

Yeah, it's Cirrus you'll likely have to look for abroad. They do exist - I've seen a lot of them myself. It's not that you'll need to find Cirrus so as not to be charged, you'll need to find Cirrus so as to be able to get money out *at all*.

The cash card use abroad is currently free but It will likely change..................... :(

`Customers with the basic FlexAccount cashcard have their service supplied by Mastercard and so will not be charged at the moment, but Nationwide says it is looking to introduce charges for these cards too.`

Hmmm - interesting. I hadn't heard that. I'm off to Euroland in 2 weeks time and I'm in the process of opening a Nationwide account now to store my spending money. Odd that they never mentioned anything about these new charges in the bank

There is no charge in 'Euroland' - NW are passing on a 1% Visa fee in the 'rest of the World', see http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/foreigntransactions.htm which includes a list of countries where the fee is or is not charged.

    Hi
My son has a Nationwide cashbuilder card, and is going abroad on Saturday to Ibiza for his first holiday abroad with friends. Can he use his card in cash machines, and if not what is the safest alernative please for him to take money?
    Thanks
    Steve

Spanky, all I can find on the Nationwide site is:

"withdraw up to £300 a day at any Nationwide or LINK cash machine"

There's no mention of foreign withdrawals or who underwrites the card (Visa, Maestro, etc). I would suggest a quick phone call to Nationwide or pop into the branch and ask. I've always found them very helpful when answering questions like this.

As for alternatives, it's Euros over there so I'd suggest either traveler's cheques or just buy the currency here and make sure he keeps it safe (spread it around different parts of luggage, makes use of hotel safes, doesn't go out with *all* of it at once etc).
