15 months since I posted this and still no signs of redevelopment. Only Tesco and 2 other shops left now, looks like plans may have been shelved. I asked one of the workers in Tesco and they haven't got a clue what's going on either! Pity, I was looking forward to a nice new shopping centre!

The economic climate dictates its best to hold off a while and if the Tesco store is still turning a profit then they'll be in no hurry as they wont be making anything while the new store gets built, look at Knocknagoney (if you know the store) they practically rebuilt the store around the customers just so they didn't have to close down for a few months - dont believe they could manage that at Northcott where its gonna be major development.

Think you're in for a wait but sure it will happen, in the meantime, bring back Primark - I hate Abbeycentre :(

  • I saw the plans for the redevelopment of Northcott when I worked with Newtownabbey Borough Council back in 2003 - here we are seven years later and not really any further on. Don't forget that Antrim and Carrickfergus have had new stores since then, and with Tesco pushing for a store in Ballyclare, even less reason to redevelop Northcott. Personally, I cant see it happening for some time yet

Their plans showed building a brand new store next to the old one so it could continue trading, then knocking the old one down to construct the mall in its place afterwards.

For me? I remember cream donuts and curvy bottles of coca cola in the upstairs cafe that sat between stewarts and primark and being taken there for a treat after the weekly shop on a Thursday night.....a highlight of the seventies
  • raven - they built knocknagoney around the customers as that was the cheapest way of doing it, they did look at a complete knock down and rebuild with a temp store beside it as they did in Springhill in Bangor...........Knocknagoney was a nightmare as a customer every week the thing had changed

generally thats the way supermarkets do it a temp store beside the building of a new one if a store already exists makes sense, trying not to leave the customers affected (and therefore their profits lol!)

  • In Carrick the store stayed open too while they built on the side of it.
  • I heard a rumour they can't do anything until the 2 small shops that are left(chemist and 'something special') close, and apparently they have a lease until sometime next year- Chemist supposedly owns both shops and is refusing to move out until the lease is over.

So i heard anyway, but you know chinese whispers.....

Remember the inshops style section near primark maybe? Even looked old and miserable back then to be honest. The chippy was nice back then i think the Dolphin or blue dolphin was it?

Come to think of it and going off topic... i hadn't been to the inshops in belfast in years for a while there, i went back and it's pretty much exactly the god damn same lol!! The cafe bit with those hideous 80s chairs!?, jesus i wouldnt eat outa that if you paid me. Inshops really is a time machine

Not sure- I know a few of the staff in Northcott, and don't think it's closing just yet. I know they've said several times they are over the last 10 years, but doubt it will be that soon.
Was in the other week and place is dying- lights not working, bins everywhere for leaks, watermarks on the walls..... Only place open is Tesco's and chemist, which I think owns the gift shop? Tesco's didn't have much, and gift shop was a bit pricey....
