Have heard lots of rumours and just wanted to know if anyone could confirm that Northcott is closing down to make way for a 24 hour Tesco? And if so, anyone know when this is happening?

Yes, that would be correct. But Tesco is just part of the plan - it will be an entire new mall, and will be known as Sandyknowes Shopping Centre.

NORTHCOTT Shopping Centre in Glengormley is set to be demolished and re-developed as a new, modern shopping complex, better equipped to serve the retail needs of the local community.
An ambitious £35 million regeneration plan is in the pipeline to construct a brand new retail outlet, which will be known as Sandyknowes Shopping Centre, and will include a food superstore, caf! and 11 mall units, together with a petrol filling station on the Northcott site.
Representatives from Blanca Developments were at Mossley Mill on Monday night to make a presentation on the revamp plans for the local complex - which was constructed over 35 years ago - to members of the Council's Planning Committee.
A spokesperson for Blanca said: "This new development represents a high quality modern development for the area, replacing the current centre which, although of its time, is now somewhat run down and in need of redress.
"Within the current economic climate, these exciting proposals are achievable within the short term, and will help cement local construction jobs in the short to medium term."
Councillors heard that Northcott already benefits from previous planning approvals on the site for a much larger development, which is no longer considered to meet the demands of retail tenants.
This being the case, centre management and their design team reassessed the way forward for the centre.
New proposals now seek to develop a unit for the principal anchor, Tesco, who inherited the existing store as part of the Stewarts acquisition in the late 1990's, to bring modern convenience retailing to local customers.
The remaining mall units will similarly be upgraded at the centre, providing the opportunity to secure enhanced representation from multiples, in addition to quality local independents.
The spokesperson for Blanca Developments advised: "This new application will have significant benefits for the Netwownabbey area; it redevelops and enhances the existing district centre, improving the built form, surrounding amenity and overall shopping environment for the local population, whilst providing immediate employment for those in the construction industry, and long term employment for retail sector employees.
"The design has been produced to allow trading of the current foodstore to continue whilst the new store is under construction, so as to minimise impact on customers. Furthermore, the design has evolved to ensure minimal impacts on residential amenity by way of noise, traffic and built form.
"The proposed development will provide a quality shopping centre for the area, designed to a high standard, and representing a major investment in the existing district centre."
An application on the new proposals is to be submitted to planners by the end of the month and if succcesful, it is hoped that construction works will commence on site at the start of the new year.

Agree - Northcott is a full Depression Centre! I feel sorry for any retailers that are in there at the minute. The only reason I go there is for Tescos because I know it won't be busy.

I do hope they redevelope it. It used to be a great shopping centre (when I was I child I used to love going there - young shopaholic!).

And I learned to drive in their car park!! :D
