The only thing i would say to the above post, is would it still be econimical in 20 years. The washer/dryer i have has lasted years but its so old when i had house rewired it trips the rcd as its pulling too much. Yet there is nothing wrong with it its just things have changed.

Technology changes, who would have thought you could have a bagless vacuum cleaner 20 years ago.

Hi, You really can't beat quality! Put it this way a 15 year old Miele washer today would still perform well compared to a modern day any other brand machine.

BTW - Bagless cleaners - oh no! Bagged is far better, but we could offend others for going off topic!

Hi, I really disagree with your point of view. It does matter where you buy it from. Why do you think people buy from John Lewis? Its reputation, people know if something happens with their product they will get looked after.

Also your guarantee is with the retailer not the manufacturer!

You recommend Bosch as I understand.

When you buy a Bosch product e.g washing machine you get a 2 year warranty - however you have to fill in a questionnaire and send it off to Bosch in order to qualify for the second year. So you do have a connection to the manufacturer.

I buy a number of electrical items as I rent out a number of properties. Its all about price for me (as it seems it is for the OP) if anything does go wrong I just contact the manufacturer if I get no joy from the retailer.

If I saw the same washing machine for £400 at John Lewis but elsewhere for £300 my natural instinct would be to buy it elsewhere.

Perhaps others have a different view point but if nothing goes wrong what exactly do John Lewis do for their extra money?

I can always buy a monthly insurance which covers me for ALL my domestic appliances with the money saved by not buying from them.

John Lewis may provide long warranties but you pay for it within the price.

I have always contacted the manufacturer for warranty repairs, never the retailer, never had a problem.

That said since buying Bosch I have never had to, and I get 4 years included anyway (HSBC premier give another 2 years on top for free) so its a no brainer :)

My original point was that if you are on a website with M&S plastered all over it while purchasing something, you expect that wesite to be M&S's website, but with large electrical goods that is not the case.

I believe it is the complete package that people look for not solely a cheap price. People want to see factual information about the product, they want to know that they are giving their card details to a reputable company, they want to know the retailer has stock, the list goes on and on, its not just about the cheapest price.

Guarantees - Legally it is the retailer that has to guarantee the product but of course, it is sensible for the manufacturer to do the repairs, after all they made it! Put it this way, I am a retailer and I will only sell product where I know that the manufacturer will look after our customers properly, because if the manufacturer doesn't it is ultimately our responsibilty, and I don't want a manufacturer's poor service soil our reputation.

... I think if you surveyed online consumers you would be surprised at the findings. While the name of the company and reputation are a factor, the draw of cheap prices online is what a large % would still be looking for! Thats why they are online in the first place and not down at their local retail park.

Oh by the way - I don't recommend Bosch but if the budget is only £300 then Bosch is prbably the best.

I only recommend Miele as that is the only brand we have at home ourselves.
