No hot water following power cut? :-(

:confused:we had a power cut on sat, since then we have had no hot water. we have econ 7 and the flat is all electric. i havent touched any switches or anything so assumed it would all just come back on when the power was restored (was cut off for about 4 hours) but it hasnt, everything else works fine but no hot water! i cant see anything like a 'reset' switch or anything that i should press, does anyone know what is going on with it??

First thought is the power surge may have tripped the breaker in your distribution board. Make sure everything in there is in the "on" position.

Your fuse board, electrics box, consumer unit, whatever you call it. Something may have 'tripped' and a switch might need flicking back. Look to see if any switches are the opposite way up to the rest of them?

Do you hae anything that looks anything like this ... plastic covered unit - lots of switches. Might just be one row (most usual) or might be several rows

Each switch has an on/off and will usually all be in the same position.

Then there's a "master" switch that says on/off. If that one were off then you'd have nothing.

As you have just ONE thing not working, it might be that if you track down this unit and flick the one switch that's the opposite way to all the others it'll work again by magic.

    Here's another version - more usual - http://img1.photographersdirect.com/img/15268/wm/pd917477.jpg

It's most likely to be in a cupboard, maybe in the hallway, or under stairs. Might be outside if there's an indoor/outdoor porch type of place.
  • there is something that looks something like that in the hall! 2 plastic boxes up high, one with 8 'things' in it and a switch that says on and one with 3 things on it that says off i think if i pulled the things out there would be fuses inside but dont know if i want to touch any of them!!

am also quite sure that the one that says off has always said off

Maybe the easiest thing would be to post a picture of your fuse board, and someone will tell you if any switches are flicked off that shouldn't be?

Sorry for not answering your question - I got distracted. I see I'm redundant now ;)

  • i took pics of it but its asking me to post a link!!! argghh

the only switches are one on each box, the 'things' are black rectangle things with different coloured dots on them (blue red white) that look like they can be pulled out

hmmm should i switch the switch that says off to on, then both the switches would be on? or should i just call an electrician out?!!
  • yes they both look like that - with dots on them!
