We used Uswitch, changing our gas supplier (pre-payment card) from EDF to NPower, WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!

The site showed us a saving of £98.00 per year, so thought why not.

EDF was costing us about £7-£8 per week, what was Npower??
Lets just say on a good day it was £4!! YES A DAY!!! No Power charges were awful! 50p a day just to have it!! Npower must mean No Power, because you cant blooming afford it!! Most expensive fee's/rates we have ever had!

We are now in the process of going back to EDF, not via Uconned-sorry Uswitch!

I assume they get commission from the utility companies, but in-accurate information in order to make us try a switch?

In future i will avaoid Uswitch like the plague! i do not trust any info they have on there site at all!

Have you used this site and had a disappointing result? - or a good one would be good!
Are there better sites out there?
Why is it, when you actually need something, the discount offer finished the day before?

The comparison sites all work with the information you give. Use annual use in kwh and check the price per kwh and the small print of each tariff.
  • Done everything-i use to sell gas and electric, so i know the ins and outs, it just never added up like it showed on the site!

Well, it should do - you should have been put on the tariff you signed up to. Did you end up on a different tariff?

I've been told today that USwitch does not have up to date information and that it is sponsored by one or more of the energy companies. And that the same goes for other comparison sites.

I've asked if anyone has any evidence that this is untrue but so far not a word.

That the cost of power from EDF is one quarter of the cost of power from nPower (when balanced over a whole year.)

You may be on an older nPower tariff with seasonal weighting (where you pay an extra £25 on a winter month but get this back through paying less over summer months) - though I don't think this is available on pre-payment.

Or you may have not correctly selected the fact that you wanted a pre-payment only quote.

Standing charges are expensive for both companies (£180 for nPower, £120 to £160 for EDF). But the difference in price is nowhere near 75%. And uSwitch suggests EDF is cheaper in my region for prepayment and nPower is cheaper for a credit meter.

Uswitch is definately wrong with my old nPower tariff, it is defintately correct with the new tariffs though.

It's kind of difficult to prove a negative.
Many suppliers do offer commision to the switching sites, but they should all be registered by Ofgem and only able to give accurate information.
If they are not given the tariffs by a supplier then they cannot include them.

It's not sponsorship, but it is in their interest for you to switch (to pretty much anyone) - the man at the door is in the same boat, but he only wants you to switch to one supplier, his.

You can find a list of the companies that sponsor Uswitch on the website. British Gas is not one of those companies, yet comes out top for most people on here. The information is very up to date. A lot of companies must liaise with the sites before they announce changes to the public, because sometimes new tariffs appear on the sites the same day as they come out.

The person that told you that probably worked for EDF, and telling you that led you to believe that what the website told you was incorrect and that you would be better off with them and not nPower. When in fact if Uswitch has told you nPower is cheaper, then nPower is cheaper. You should be trying to find the reason you ended up paying more, Wrong tariff/increased usage etc. But EDF will just be happy to get your customer back I’m sure.
