Saving up for BIG holiday. Your tips please on steady saving ideas

OK, we have just booked a VERY expensive holiday, for November 2010 :j. I've paid the deposit, and need to save up £6K between now and August next year.
We're a family of 3 (1 child, 9 y.o.), who like the good things in life, so we have some scope for saving on weekly shopping and stuff, but I don't want the process to be TOOOO painful.
I have a plan to get seriously ebaying a load of surplus stuff (outgrown toys & clothes, books we have read, unwanted gifts we have shoved in the spare room, etc), and I've checked our utility supplier is the best deal ATM.
What other ideas can you think of, where I can see the saving, and put the actual money saved away in the special bank account .

I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

I don't have any ideas for actually saving on spends (but the Old Style board might help) and I don't have a holiday quite that expensive (where you going, would love to have a blow out hol like that?), however I have money transferred each month by standing order from my current account to an ISA.
I know you can't save all that amount in an ISA but you and hubby can have one each which will cover it. Transferring it like this makes it feel like a bill you see so you don't look on it as available funds.
Also, put all £2 coins you receive into a money box and don't touch it.0 -
What is your mortgage at the moment and what would it be if the rate went up to 8% or 13%? Put the additional amount one side, because it may of course happen.0

Lanzarote and Sharm El Sheik are great in Nov and you'd have change from £6K.

Yes but if its somewhere easy really wants to go and it can be paid for without getting into debt they why not!
Easy where are you going it sounds amazing I am so jealous!
As for raising the money, ebay anything not nailed down, I know you don't want to take a drop in your standard of living but I'm sure you could make some concessions to your food bill without noticing too much.2009 wins: Cadburys Chocolate Pack x 6, Sally Hansen Hand cream, Ipod nano! mothers day meal at Toby Carvery! :j :j :j :j0 -

Yes Richard, it is a lot of money to spend on a holiday, but that is our choice. I didn't ask for comments on where we are going, that is decided, my husband wants us to celebrate my 50th birthday in style.
I'm just asking all the friendly, helpful people on here for ideas, so we use a bit less of our hard-earned savings. OK?I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -

Crossed posts with you dieselhead ...
We're going to a Beaches resort in Negril Jamaica, and we'll be having a small suite on the beachfront to accommodate the 3 of us.
After all, You're only 50 once in this life......
On the groceries bill front, I'm actually sitting planning meals at the moment, to see if I can cut down on my bad habit of buying some convenience foods (working mum habit I'm afraid). I'm looking at what our average supermarket spend per month has been up to now, and plan to bank the difference between that and our new spend amount at the end of each month.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. What about trying to drop the level/ brand of food you buy? Wasn't there something on MSE about this? Also, what about cooking bigger batches and freezing the rest for later - I always find that one batch cost less that 2 smaller ones!
Also, do you take packed lunch with you or you buy sandwich, etc? I find that sandwiches are quite expensive, and we often cook more for dinner and then take left overs for lunch (we both have microwaves at work, so it helps).
Another trick that I find helps me, is to work out how much money would I need for a month and once I have the salary in my account, leave the required amount plus a bit, and transfer the rest into savings. Of course, if something unexpected happens and I need more, I will take out of the savings, but it helps not to spend what you don't have ready! It doesn't mean I can't afford to go out, or treat myself to what I like. I still do more than my OH would like me to!!
And £6K is not too much for holiday. We booked a week away for July and it cost us £3.1k. Plus airport parking and other expenses while on holiday. Yes, it is a big money, but we can afford it and we are doing it. Our honeymoon trip cost us £8k - we went to New Zealand for 3 weeks, and we are happy we did it.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
