Hi all
I recently purchased a new car under a finance agreement in my own name.
My dad frequently uses my car and therefore took out the insurance in his name on it as it worked out cheaper to have him as the proposer and me as a named driver. I pay for the insurance myself.
He has 4 years no claims on his own car which has obviously helped in keeping the price down (on my own the insurance premium would be significantly higher as I am only 18, have held my full licence for less than a year and have a conviction).
We have recently been sent a letter as he hasn't produced proof of his NCD. He said that he hasn't yet done this as he is not sure whether it's actually ok to have two insurance policies in his name.
Does anyone have any insight on this? And what will they accept as proof of no claims, as he obviously doesn't have a renewal letter for his other car!
Thanks, Danni x

He can have more than one policy in his own name. However you only earn one set of no claims bonus per policy so on a second vehicle he has nil no claims bonus. Some Insurers will allow an introductory no claims bonus on a second car but it is unlikely they will with a young driver on the policy.
It is likely when you are not able to provide the no claims bonus the Insurers will increase your premium dramatically.
It sounds like you are the main user of your car, are the Insurers aware of this?0 -
Have you had quotes for being the main driver, and your dad as your named driver? My son did this when he bought his first car. His dad and me were named drivers, but he was the main one. It took down his premiums by a good lot just by having our names on there. I can't remember by how much but I think it was over £100. He was 21 when he bought his first car, a 1.6 Ford Focus and he was just over £400 with Elephant.co.uk.
You're better trying to build up your own NCD.0 -
Oh dear. What a mess.
Insurable interest? Anyone?
Who is the registered owner of the vehicle?0 -

Yes they are aware I am the main driver. They have quoted a premium of almost double what I'm paying now if we have no proof of no claims.Who is the registered owner of the vehicle?

I am.
Don't you get any discount for having a parent as an additional driver? Maybe it's worth shopping around. As I said, my son got discount for putting me and his dad down as additional drivers. We both have clean licences. It'll still be dearer than going under your dad's name, but you will be managing to build up your no claims.
Is your car an expensive one? Could you have third party, fire and theft until you manage to build up some no claims? Are you on your dad's insurance, as i'm sure with Direct Line additional drivers can build up no claims in their own name.0 -
Oh, on another note forgot to add...
I have had car insurance for over a year now on different policies (changed providers twice due to passing my test and buying my new car, both increased in price dramatically if I had stayed with the same provider).
I haven't claimed on any of my policies, therefore I have one years' No Claims. However because of the switching I haven't had any renewal letters confirming this. If I write to both my previous insurers (Quinn Direct and Tesco) asking them to provide me with confirmation that I have had no claims during my time with them, will this be accepted as proof of my own No Claims?
I am not connecting this with my previous questions so don't link it with my current situation.Mastercard:£450/£700 [strike]Car finance: £0/£8200 [/strike]paid in full![strike]Credit agreement (laptop): £0/£550[/strike]paid in full! Barclaycard: £500/£7500 -

Yeah I have had quotes with me as the main driver and parents as named but they are all so expensive. My car is an 2006 Peugeot 206 1.4, I bought it for £6000 and I have to have fully comp on it because it's on a finance agreement.Mastercard:£450/£700 [strike]Car finance: £0/£8200 [/strike]paid in full![strike]Credit agreement (laptop): £0/£550[/strike]paid in full! You have a year of driving without making a claim, but you have no NCB!
You are granted a year's no claim bonus if you have been under cover on the same policy for a complete year.
From the record you have told us, you don't have any NCD to claim.0 -

If you are the owner of the car, then your father cannot take out the insurance for it. In the event of a claim, they will invalidate the policy, and not pay out to you!0 -

Well that's a bit of a ridiculous system. That means I could be driving for 10 years with no claims at all but if I were to switch providers each year because I could get it cheaper elsewhere those 10 years would count for nothing?Mastercard:£450/£700 [strike]Car finance: £0/£8200 [/strike]paid in full![strike]Credit agreement (laptop): £0/£550[/strike]paid in full!
