Good question
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64
Intel was forced to follow suit, introducing modified NetBurst family processors, initially referred to as "IA-32e" or "EM64T" and now called Intel 64 and almost identical to AMD64. x86-64 is backwards compatible with 32-bit code without any performance loss.

Tool to find out if it can
Processor Check for 64-Bit Compatibility
This is a standalone processor check utility which you can use without VMware Server to perform the same check and determine whether your CPU is supported for virtual machines with 64-bit guest operating systems.

Latest Version 5.5 | 2005/11/29 | Build 18463
Download for Windows | Download for Linux
Note: This utility is provided without support from VMware.

In the small print where it says
Supported Features: Intel® EM64T 1
1 'Processor will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel EM64T-enabled BIOS.'
So... it does do 64-bit 'operations' as in a whole OS that's 64-bit
I'm not 100% sure though, I mean I don't want to download that huge Windows 7 ISO to find it won't work0 -
Its confusing I know I wasnt 100% sure hence why i said good question
Found this thread
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=130542
"Since the Prescott chips shipped from 2.8GHz to 3.4GHz, it's hard to say with 100% certainty what you have in there and whether or not it's capable of x64 or not. If you want to be sure if your CPU supports x86-64, download and run cpu-z and see if your CPU has "EM64T" instructions support:"
TBH unless you have over 2gb I would go for 32bit I am using x64 of windows 7 now, I only have 2gb though but I am using it on a 4gb pc soon0 -

Okay no problem seemed to be finding conflicting info still that seems to say it doesnt
Its great windows 7 seems to support a lot of hardware and seems to run really smooth I have it on a 2 year laptop and it runs better than vista0 -
Yeah I mean I would love to just download the x64 anyway but I have a 10GB bandwidth limit

Well, I'll start downloading the 32-bit, it will be fun to try out ^,^0 -
