my lab is a poo muncher

:eek:i have a lab x rotty but she has the temperament of a lab and the colourings of one with the head and broadness of a rotty.
i rescued her 5 years ago and she was on bakers or wafcol food for a long time.
about 6 months ago she started eating her poo.she is around 10 years old(unsure of exact age as she was a rescue dog).we also have a german shepherd but she never eats his ,only her own and not every day.the poos are picked up daily and have now started to be picked up as she does them but im worried whats wrong with her.shes regularly wormed with drontal plus and is very well looked after.can anyone help?thankyou.

she knows its wrong as she waits to see if anyone is watching before she does it.

  • try adding a little pineapple to her food every day - it usually works. Did you change her food around the time she started doing this? I wonder what triggered it at her age?

nowt like own brand is there?hehe. Yeah I agree with FC, the pineapple should do the trick - it worked with my uncle's shih tzu.

I assume no pun was intended with the shihtzu comment!? :rotfl:

What does your vet say about this new habit?

Mine did that when she wasn't digesting her food properly - she doesn't realise she's being disgusting, she's just snacking on what she thinks is more food.

A change of food to a more digestible one and a total ban on rawhide chews did the trick for us. I tried the pineapple but it didn't work for us.

Both my dogs licks their lips when they've done a poo as if they happy they've done a snack for later on, tho' freshly "done" seems to be preferred!
Luckily only one does actually eat poos these days if I don't clear up quick enough and that's the labbyX oddly enough. It's a habit they both had as young dogs (yuk) and for the most part of their lives they've been quite good at leaving well alone, but if ever they have to go into kennels (which is extremely rare) they always start again.

Pineapple unfortunately didn't break their habit either.

    thanks for the replies.
funnily enough i think i may have changed her food around the time that she started doing it.i changed from bakers/wafcol to tescos premium as i was told by my vet that they are much the same.i havent taken her to the vet yet as she seems in good health with this being the only problem.
she does have quite a few rawhide chews for her gums which maybe i should refrain from then.she also is an absolute piggy lol but shes never without and always has food in her bowl so definitely doesnt poo munch from hunger lol.
some very funny comments on this page and i will try all the suggestions and failing all these will take her to the vet.

lol, she's part labrador, she doesn't need to be hungry to eat.:D

Re the chews - at the risk of sounding really disgusting you could tell mine wasn't digesting them as you could see the lumps she'd bitten off in her doings. Depends how closely you want to inspect what is coming out......

i will try and get a closer look:p
she probably doesnt digest them properly as she is such a piggy that she often doesnt chew them properly and ends up getting them stuck and gagging them back up or i rub her throat!shes so greedy bless her!
however,im glad shes not alone in this gross habit that the dogs seem to love.
the worst is when she has done it and wants to give you a big sloppy kiss lmao!!:rotfl:poo breath isnt the word for it!!
